Police Scotland Responds to Celtic Pitch Invasion
Police Scotland has pledged to take decisive action against any individuals found responsible for criminal offenses following an incident involving Celtic supporters during the Scottish Premiership match against Hearts. The Scottish Professional Football League (SPFL) has condemned the pitch invasion that occurred at the end of the match as “totally unacceptable.”
Celtic Fans Storm the Field After Dramatic Finish
The disturbance erupted after Callum Osmund’s late goal, which, in the eighth minute of stoppage time, secured a 3-1 lead for Celtic, effectively clinching the league title. As the final whistle approached, hundreds of Celtic fans flooded the pitch, leading to chaos.
Hearts Players Face Aggression from Supporters
Reports of “serious physical and verbal abuse” directed at Hearts players and staff emerged shortly after the incident. The Edinburgh club issued a statement expressing concern over the alarming behavior exhibited by the fans.
Players’ Safety Compromised Amid Chaos
Christian Borchgrevink, a substitute for Hearts, recounted his experience during the chaos. “People were worried. I was on the bench but jumped out to protect the other players,” he told Norwegian newspaper Verdens Gang. Fortunately, all players returned safely, although evidence of injuries was reported.
Ongoing Police Investigation and Club Accountability
Assistant Detective Constable Mark Sutherland confirmed that a police investigation is underway. “We spoke to Hearts yesterday and are following up to determine if any players were assaulted,” he stated. He emphasized that law enforcement will take “strong and swift action” against any and all criminal behavior that surfaces during their investigation.
SPFL Denounces Unacceptable Behavior
The SPFL reiterated its condemnation, stating, “We completely condemn the scene where a large number of Celtic supporters invaded the field of play.” They underscored the importance of safety in sporting events and urged anyone with information about the incident to report it to the authorities.
Game Outcome Clarified Amid Confusion
Despite the pitch invasion, the match was officially considered completed, with the SPFL clarifying that they were informed by the referee that the game was finished, not abandoned. Hearts, however, described the atmosphere as “intimidating,” leading to their hasty exit from Celtic Park without changing their clothing.
Hearts Call for Strong Action from Authorities
Hearts has labeled the incident as “disgraceful” and detrimental to Scottish football. They have called on football governing bodies to adopt stringent measures to safeguard players’ and supporters’ security as well as the integrity of the sport.
