Can Daniel Dubois Finally Overcome Oleksandr Usyk?
Daniel Dubois has faced Oleksandr Usyk on two occasions, and each time he has encountered defeat. As the newly crowned WBO heavyweight champion, the question remains: is Dubois prepared to finally claim victory against the renowned Ukrainian boxer?
Dubois first stepped into the ring against Usyk in 2023, challenging him for the unified WBA, WBO, and IBF titles in Poland. That match took a turn when Usyk recovered from what was deemed a low blow, ultimately leading to Dubois being counted out in the ninth round.
Usyk was stripped of the IBF title between his bouts with Tyson Fury, allowing Dubois to capture that championship and earn a knockout victory over Anthony Joshua in 2024. Fueled by that success, Dubois attempted a second challenge against Usyk last year, but this time Usyk defeated him with even greater ease, knocking Dubois out in the fifth round.
Despite these setbacks, Dubois demonstrated his resilience by engaging in a demanding fight against Fabio Wardley on May 9, which allowed him to rebuild his career and reclaim his world title. His promoter, Frank Warren, believes Dubois is now in a strong position to face Usyk once more.
Warren expressed optimism about a potential rematch, stating, “I would like to see Daniel with him again. He’s grown mentally. Physically he’s there, but mentally he’s grown to this point now. I want to see that game again, I really do. We’ll see.” He underscored the anticipation for a rematch, predicting it would be an intense bout.
The fight against Wardley marked a significant turning point for Dubois, according to Warren. He emphasized that the tough competition honed Dubois’s mental focus and determination. “It was a tough fight, but I truly believe that this fight will help him improve even more,” he commented.
At just 28 years old, Dubois’s career is already being compared to Hall of Fame standards. Warren noted the significance of Dubois’s victory over Joshua, saying, “He did a job against AJ that no one else could have done,” highlighting Dubois’s potential for greatness in the boxing world.
In a show of confidence, Dubois’s team believes he has significantly improved since his previous encounters with Usyk. Muhammad Ali, head of boxing performance analysis for Dubois, stated that they have fine-tuned both his in-ring and out-of-ring performance strategies. He emphasized Usyk’s scientific approach to boxing, suggesting that if a third fight were to happen, Dubois would be prepared for an even better performance than before, showcasing the progress made in his training.
