UK Launches Pan-African Support Program During London Tech Week
The UK Department for Commerce and Industry for Africa is backing the inaugural UK Africa Ecosystem Week, a coordinated pan-African initiative set to take place during London Tech Week. This marks a significant step forward as the UK positions itself as a global launchpad for African technology companies.
Collaboration to Enhance Opportunities for African Founders
Powered by Ventures54 and in collaboration with the UK-Africa Sandbox, the UK Department of Business and Trade (DBT), UK-South Africa Tech Hub, UK-Nigeria Tech Hub, London & Partners, and the Mayor’s Office, UK-Africa Ecosystem Week aims to introduce a structured pathway for participation in London Tech Week. This event is among the world’s largest annual technology gatherings, drawing over 100,000 attendees across 500 events.
Curated Experiences for Founders
Throughout the week, founders will have access to a series of curated experiences designed to enhance their ability to navigate opportunities and achieve their growth objectives. The initiative will offer tailored support, including specialized sessions, concierge services, dedicated workspaces, and a distinguished UK-Africa Ecosystem Day that will unite key stakeholders in the market entry space, alongside the broader UK and African technology communities.
Building on Previous Engagements
This initiative builds on London’s multi-year efforts to promote ecosystem engagement initiated by London Tech Week. What started as an informal gathering through the London Africa Network has evolved into a full-fledged program, culminating in last year’s successful UK-Africa Ecosystem Day. This year, the support expands to an entire week aimed at enhancing the ways in which African founders access the UK market.
Insights from Key Leaders
Anthony William Catt, founder of Ventures54 and UK-Africa Sandbox, noted the increasing influx of African founders seeking to explore the UK market during London Tech Week. Over the past four years, a simple mixer event has transformed into a comprehensive week-long agenda. Catt emphasized the need for a structured support track to empower African founders in maximizing their experiences in the UK.
The UK’s Role in Scaling African Businesses
Ben Ainslie, Her Majesty’s Trade Secretary for Africa, highlighted the UK’s robust technology ecosystem, abundant venture capital, and unparalleled access to global talent. These factors make the UK an ideal next step for ambitious African founders aiming for international scalability. Ainslie reiterated the UK’s commitment to facilitating the success of African businesses in the UK through initiatives like the UK-Africa Sandbox.
Attracting High-Growth Founders from Across Africa
Janet Coyle CBE, Managing Director of London & Partners, emphasized the significance of strengthening the connection between London and the African ecosystem. The UK-Africa Ecosystem Week aims to enhance collaboration and innovation, showcasing London’s pivotal role as Europe’s leading technology hub. The event will welcome high-growth founders and delegates from countries including Nigeria, South Africa, Kenya, Egypt, Algeria, and Ghana.
Year-Round Support Beyond London Tech Week
This initiative extends beyond London Tech Week, creating a year-round platform designed to assist African founders in accessing the UK market. Building on the existing national sandbox programs established by the UK-South Africa Tech Hub and UK-Nigeria Tech Hub, the initiative has now broadened into a wider UK-Africa Corridor platform, fostering pan-African partnerships and ecosystem development.
African founders and delegation leaders interested in support during UK-Africa Ecosystem Week can register online. Additionally, organizations and ecosystem partners wishing to engage with founders or support their endeavors are encouraged to get in touch with the UK and Africa Sandbox teams.
