United People’s Movement Completes Aspirant Screening for 2027 Elections
The United People’s Movement (APM) in Lagos State has finalized the screening process for aspirants aiming to contest in the upcoming 2027 general elections on its platform. This significant step was confirmed by Mr. Abiodun Abari, Chairman of the APM Lagos State Examination Committee, in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria.
Committee’s Comprehensive Review
During the screening exercise, a five-member committee reviewed the party’s sole consensus gubernatorial candidate, Prince Raja Adeoye, alongside various contenders for elective positions across the state. The committee undertook a thorough examination of three senatorial candidates, 24 candidates for the House of Representatives, and 40 candidates vying for seats in the Lagos State House of Assembly.
Successful Vetting of Candidates
According to Abari, the committee successfully approved all candidates, who will be designated as consensus candidates during the forthcoming party primaries. He emphasized that the vetting process adhered to party guidelines and resulted in a full agreement on all positions, enabling the successful screening of all applicants.
Importance of Quality Assurance
Abari highlighted the critical nature of the quality assurance measures implemented to ensure that only suitable candidates were presented. “Our aim is to serve the residents of Lagos effectively, and we want to ensure that we are putting forth the best representatives possible,” he remarked, underlining the party’s commitment to excellence in governance.
Challenges in Building Consensus
While Abari acknowledged the initial difficulties faced in achieving consensus among aspirants, he credited the unity among party leadership and members for overcoming those challenges. He noted that other aspirants voluntarily set aside their ambitions for the greater good of both the party and the nation, illustrating a spirit of collaboration.
Formation of a Strategic Coalition
Abari also revealed that the coalition between the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and APM has bolstered the opposition’s chances in Lagos leading up to the 2027 elections. This collaboration positions APM as a formidable opposition force within the state, aiming to provide a credible alternative for the electorate.
Adeoye Meets Electoral Requirements
Following his vetting, Prince Raja Adeoye expressed confidence in fulfilling all necessary requirements as stipulated by the Nigerian Electoral Act and the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC). He confirmed the submission of all requisite credentials along with the completed Lagos State Governorship Nomination Form, marking a pivotal milestone in APM’s strategic campaign to reform governance in Lagos.
