Allegations of Undermining Democracy in Sokoto State
Ambassador Faruq Malami Yabo, a prominent opposition figure in Sokoto State, has accused the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) of undermining Nigeria’s democratic institutions through political infiltration and suppression of opposition parties. His comments signal a growing concern about the state of democracy in the country.
Surge in Support Ahead of 2027 Elections
Recently securing the party’s senatorial ticket for the 2027 elections, Yabo highlighted the outpouring of support he has received from various stakeholders across the senatorial district. Speaking to journalists and supporters, he attributed this enthusiasm to the people’s desire for credible leadership, inclusive governance, and a clear political vision for Sokoto State, noting widespread dissatisfaction with the current administration.
Setbacks Under the APC Administration
Former diplomats have echoed Yabo’s sentiments, citing significant setbacks in critical sectors such as security, agriculture, education, healthcare, and infrastructure under the APC-led government. Yabo criticized the current state of affairs, stating, “If you look at the path of the APC today, it is a complete failure,” as he outlined issues affecting public safety and essential services.
Acknowledgment of Political Support
Yabo commended former Sokoto State governor and current senator Aminu Waziri Tambuwal for his recent decision to withdraw from the senatorial race in support of Yabo. He described Tambuwal’s actions as exemplary statesmanship, which not only garnered national attention but also reinforced unity within the opposition movement.
Defining Political Legacy
Recognizing Tambuwal’s significant political history, Yabo emphasized the challenges of replacing him. Tambuwal’s extensive experience includes serving as a member of the House of Representatives from 2003, Speaker from 2011 to 2015, and two terms as the governor of Sokoto State.
Political Ideology and Transition
Reflecting on his political journey, Yabo explained that his defection from the APC to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in 2023 was guided by ideological considerations rather than personal ambition. “We joined PDP because we believed in the vision of Sokoto State,” he stated, emphasizing that the quest for political positions did not drive his decision.
Concerns Over Democratic Practices
Yabo accused the APC of intentionally weakening the opposition through tactics of destabilization and external interference, raising alarms about the health of Nigeria’s multiparty democracy. He asserted that all political parties should operate freely according to their constitutions, cautioning against the current trend of opposition infiltration as detrimental to democratic governance.
Call for Robust Democratic Framework
In light of recent political realignments and coalition discussions among opposition parties for the upcoming elections, Yabo underscored the need for reliable election processes, robust institutions, and the fundamental right of citizens to choose their political paths without coercive influences. His statements reflect an urgent call for a democratic framework that supports diverse political views and the integrity of electoral practices.
