Emphasis on AFCON Qualification Before Squad Rebuilding
Former Nigeria coach Fatai Amu has highlighted the critical need for the Super Eagles to secure qualification for the 2027 African Cup of Nations (AFCON) before embarking on a squad overhaul.
Priority on National Team Success
In an interview with Brila.net, Amu stressed that his primary focus is ensuring that Nigeria qualifies for the tournament, while also gradually integrating new talent into the squad. He remarked, “It is essential to solidify our senior team’s chances to qualify for the 2027 AFCON. This cannot be a gamble; we must prioritize this goal.”
Cautious Introduction of New Talent
Amu pointed out that while introducing new players is important, it should be done judiciously during the qualification phase. He mentioned, “Once we secure our qualification, we will begin scouting for players both domestically and internationally. While it’s sensible to inject fresh talent into the lineup, any changes should be approached carefully to maintain team cohesion.”
Learning from Previous Disappointments
Reflecting on the disappointment of missing the 2026 FIFA World Cup, Amu called for this setback to serve as a motivating factor for both the players and football authorities. He noted that the absence from such a prestigious event should galvanize the team to focus on AFCON qualification, emphasizing, “Missing out on the World Cup is a bitter pill to swallow. Our players should strive to ensure they don’t have to endure that feeling again.”
Building a Sustainable Team
Using Arsenal’s success as a benchmark, Amu articulated the importance of a measured approach to team development. He pointed out, “Arsenal achieved remarkable success through consistency. Mikel Arteta introduced new players gradually, which revitalized the squad. We can adopt a similar strategy in our rebuilding efforts.”
Maintaining a Core Group of Performers
According to Amu, Nigeria should continue to rely on stellar performers like Victor Osimhen and Ademola Lookman while incorporating other in-form players into the fold. He remarked, “Osimhen and Lookman are currently standing out in their respective leagues. Our recruitment strategy should target players ready to contribute meaningfully to the national team dynamic.”
Enhancing Player Commitment
Amu concluded by emphasizing the importance of enhancing the commitment levels of players selected for the Super Eagles. He urged, “It’s imperative that we refine our operational strategies, from timely arrivals at camps to logistical arrangements. Implementing set deadlines will ensure players are not arriving just days before matches, barring unavoidable circumstances.”
Fatai Amu earned four caps representing Nigeria, formerly known as the Green Eagles. After retiring from active play, he transitioned into coaching and has managed prominent club teams like 3SC and Sunshine Stars. He is recognized as one of Nigeria’s most respected soccer coaches and has also had stints as head coach for the U-17 national team and assistant coach for the Olympic U-23 team.
