Adebayo Criticizes Tinubu’s Tax-Focused Administration
Adewole Adebayo, the presidential candidate for the Social Democratic Party (SDP), has voiced strong critiques of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration, claiming it prioritizes tax collection over fostering economic opportunities for Nigerians. In a recent television interview, Adebayo characterized the current government’s approach as one that aggressively extracts revenue instead of promoting productivity and overall economic growth.
Taxation Without Economic Foundation
Although Adebayo clarified his stance on taxation, stating that he does not oppose it outright, he emphasized the importance of creating a conducive environment for both individuals and businesses before imposing heavy tax burdens. “You cannot form a government solely focused on collecting taxes from the people,” he asserted, advocating for a government role that stimulates innovation and supports the growth of small and medium-sized enterprises.
Government as a Catalyst for Growth
The SDP candidate explained that the role of government should be to empower entrepreneurs and enable them to flourish. “The government is an intermediary, not a pickpocket,” he said, underlining the belief that governmental policies should nurture rather than hinder economic development. Adebayo further criticized the government’s current fiscal policies, asserting they are stifling entrepreneurship and making it increasingly difficult for the average Nigerian to make ends meet.
Investing in Nigerian Entrepreneurs
Looking at the potential of young entrepreneurs, Adebayo argued that instead of imposing restrictive policies, the government should invest in their developmental growth. He illustrated this point by referencing a hypothetical scenario where investing in a young Uber driver could lead to significant technological advancements, such as drone development. His vision includes enabling small businesses to expand beyond local constraints and establish brands that can resonate across West Africa.
Economic Policies and Their Impact
In his critique of the Tinubu administration, Adebayo stated that excessive taxation and restrictive economic policies are adversely affecting the purchasing power of already impoverished Nigerians. He highlighted that the government’s approach does not focus on starting with a strategy that efficiently uses taxpayer revenue. Instead, he believes that the current policies are counterproductive and might ultimately destroy economic stability.
Concerns Over the Removal of Fuel Subsidies
Adebayo, along with other SDP candidates, reiterated concerns regarding the removal of fuel subsidies, which they argue has exacerbated hardships for Nigerians rather than curbing corruption as promised by the government. He cautioned that if the government continues on this trajectory, it could lead to a significant deterioration in economic conditions for the populace.
A Commitment to Productivity and Welfare
Looking to the future, Adebayo pledged that an SDP-led government would prioritize constitutional provisions designed to enhance productivity, industrial growth, and support for small and medium-sized enterprises. This approach, he argues, would help improve the overall welfare of Nigerians, allowing them to thrive rather than merely survive in today’s challenging economic landscape.
