Nigerian Navy Commemorates 70 Years with Educational Outreach in Delta State
The Nigerian Naval Forward Operating Base (FOB) in Escravos, Delta State, hosted a significant educational initiative on Tuesday, providing assistance and career discussions for the Alton community of Ugborodo. This event coincides with the 70th anniversary of the Nigerian Navy’s establishment, emphasizing the organization’s commitment to civil-military relations.
Pupils from Ikpere Primary School in Warri South West Local Government Area gathered at the community hall to take part in this educational program, which aims to reinforce relations between the military and the local population. The outreach session was crafted to foster a collaborative spirit, helping bridge gaps between the navy and the communities it serves.
Naval Captain Arinzechukwu Kenneth Egwatuonwu, the Commander of FOB Escravos, expressed gratitude to the host communities for their ongoing support. He emphasized that the initiative is designed to impact children’s lives positively, stating, “It is a great joy and honor to be part of the celebration of the 70th anniversary of the Nigerian Navy alongside these children.”
Accompanied by the base’s Executive Officer, Commander Isiaku Isah Adamu, Captain Egwatuonwu stressed that providing educational support is a key aspect of the Navy’s outreach strategy. “This initiative is a crucial part of our mission to invest in the future of our children,” he added, highlighting the Navy’s dedication to fostering educational development within communities.
Captain Egwatuonwu noted that Ikpere Primary School was chosen for this program due to its contribution to the Navy’s successful operations in the area. He remarked, “We believe that this type of educational assistance will draw the Navy closer to the community and enhance our working relationship with the local population here at FOB Escravos.”
Reflecting on the Navy’s longstanding commitment, Captain Egwatuonwu reiterated that for 70 years, the Nigerian Navy has focused on safeguarding the nation’s territorial waters while recognizing the importance of educational support and community development. “We are proud to present school bags and books to young students, reinforcing our belief that education is essential for a brighter future,” he stated.
The Navy chief urged students to embrace their education, remain disciplined, and strive for excellence, reminding them that they are the future leaders of Nigeria. Representation from Ikpere Primary School, including principal Mrs. Ogunfeyemi Bola, expressed heartfelt thanks for the Navy’s generosity, highlighting the positive impact this initiative has already had on students without adequate resources.
Community leader Mr. Jeffrey Amoya also expressed appreciation for the Navy’s continuous outreach efforts towards Ugborodo. He noted, “This is not the first time; the Navy consistently demonstrates its commitment to the children in our area.” Additionally, Grade 6 student Mr. Adedayo Ojamomi conveyed gratitude on behalf of his classmates, affirming their commitment to excellence and appreciation for the Navy’s support in bringing joy to their lives.
