Renewal Group Backs Tinubu for 2027 Election, Endorses Hamzat for Lagos Governorship
The Renewal Group, a prominent political organization, has officially endorsed President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for re-election in 2027 and expressed its support for Dr. Obafemi Hamzat, the Deputy Governor of Lagos State, as the next governor of Lagos.
Lai Omotola, the convener of the group, announced this endorsement during a press conference held in Lagos on Tuesday. He explained that the decision was the result of extensive consultations and deliberations among the group’s members.
Omotola stated that the group’s support for Tinubu is fundamentally rooted in the principle of a rotating presidency. He asserted that since it is the South’s turn to lead, the region should be given the opportunity to allow Tinubu to complete his current term. “Confirming Tinubu to complete his second term will ensure political continuity and stability in the country,” he emphasized.
The Chairman applauded the current administration, noting that improved cooperation between the executive and legislative branches has bolstered political stability in Nigeria. He mentioned that the revenue of the 36 states has seen an uptick under this administration, which, coupled with the strong performance of Nigeria’s stock market, positions the nation among the most prosperous on the African continent.
According to Omotola, “If you summarize the good things and summarize the not-so-good things, you’ll see that it’s important to keep the system going for continuity.” He also touched on the upcoming 2027 general elections, expressing optimism that there will be higher voter engagement, but cautioned politicians against complacency, stressing that no candidate should take the electorate for granted.
In the context of Lagos politics, Omotola endorsed Hamzat as the preferred successor to Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, highlighting that this transition represents a milestone: it would mark the first time a deputy governor has directly succeeded a sitting governor in Lagos. He portrayed Hamzat as an experienced grassroots politician, well-equipped to handle the infrastructure and population challenges that continue to grow in the state.
While discussing the responsibilities awaiting the next governor, he acknowledged the overwhelming pressure that the daily influx of new residents places on Lagos’s infrastructure. He urged members of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) to view their electoral successes as collective achievements rather than individual triumphs.
Addressing the state of opposition politics, Omotola recognized its role in promoting democratic ideals but pointed out that it lacks the necessary cohesiveness to mount a formidable challenge in the upcoming election cycle. He also expressed concerns regarding the pressing issue of insecurity, asserting the need to depoliticize the matter. “You can’t politicize insecurity. It’s about lives. The president will not be happy to see lives lost. Controlling insecurity is a work in progress,” he stated.
Lastly, Omotola urged Nigerians to embrace productivity as the cornerstone for achieving economic growth and reducing poverty. He remarked that while elections may come and go, national prosperity hinges on people’s commitment to productive activities that stimulate economic expansion. “There are no shortcuts, no miracles. Unless factories open, construction continues, and productivity increases, we will not overcome poverty,” he warned. He also encouraged politicians who faced setbacks in party primaries to remain hopeful and continue pursuing their political ambitions.
