Kwara Police Address False Boko Haram Arrest Claims
The Kwara State Police Command has categorically denied reports circulating on social media regarding the arrest of a suspected Boko Haram member in Ilorin. Authorities warn that such misinformation could lead to undue panic among the local population.
In a statement released by Police Spokesperson Adetun Ejire Adeyemi, the command emphasized that no Boko Haram suspects have been apprehended anywhere in Kwara State. The statement, made available to The Punch, sought to clarify the nature of ongoing police operations in the area.
The police stressed that claims about the arrest of Boko Haram suspects in Ilorin are entirely unfounded. “This misinformation is baseless and poses a risk of instilling fear within the community,” the statement asserted. The command aims to keep the public well-informed to prevent unnecessary anxiety.
In a related incident, the Violent Crimes Control Squad conducted a routine surveillance operation on Tuesday night, during which they intercepted a truck believed to be transporting Fulani tourists. This operation was part of a larger effort to ensure community safety.
“To clarify and maintain transparency, operatives from the Violent Crimes Control Unit (VCRU) conducted a thorough inspection of the vehicle and its occupants,” the police noted. They confirmed that no incriminating items or security threats were found during the search.
After a comprehensive screening, all individuals in the truck identified themselves as travelers en route to Jigawa State. The police meticulously documented their identities and other vital information for safety purposes before escorting them beyond the city limits to continue their journey.
In a separate operation along the Asadam/Dangote road in Ilorin, the police have arrested three individuals suspected of armed robbery and vandalism. This action was prompted by complaints from residents regarding increasing criminal activities in the area.
Following credible intelligence regarding suspicious behavior, VCRU operatives swiftly responded, leading to the apprehension of suspects linked to a criminal organization responsible for damaging government-installed solar infrastructure and engaging in robbery activities within the region.
Initial investigations suggest that the arrested individuals belong to a broader criminal network operating in parts of the Ilorin metropolitan area. Recovered items include two locally manufactured firearms, pliers, and various drugs presumed to be used in these illicit activities.
Kwara State Commissioner of Police Adekimi Ojo praised the proactive measures of the VCRU and reassured residents of the command’s commitment to combating criminal behavior throughout the state. He emphasized that the police remain vigilant against any criminal factions attempting to disrupt the peace.
The command urged the public to dismiss the false reports while encouraging residents to refrain from disseminating unverified information that could compromise public safety and security.
