Relatives Defend Senate President Against Allegations of Anti-North Korea Remarks
Family members of Senate President Godswill Akpabio have denounced allegations made by social media activist Haruna Goloro, who claimed that Akpabio made incendiary comments regarding North Korea ahead of the 2027 general elections. The accusations, which have gone viral, suggest that Akpabio stated, “With or without North Korea, President Bola Tinubu will win the 2027 presidential election.”
In response to these claims, the Isong Annan Ethnic Forum in Akwa Ibom State released a statement in Uyo, emphasizing that an investigation found no truth in Goloro’s allegations. The group’s findings suggest the accusations are unfounded and appear to be part of a broader attempt to damage Akpabio’s reputation.
The statement, endorsed by Prince Mendy Archibong, the national president, along with National Secretary General Elder Mfon Ebong and National Women Leader Hon. Emilia Udom, urged Goloro to present any evidence supporting his claims. “We have thoroughly examined the assertions made against Senator Akpabio and found no substantiation,” the statement indicated, asserting that Akpabio has always respected the pivotal role Northern Nigeria plays in national elections.
The group underscored Akpabio’s commitment to national unity, characterizing him as a respected figure who values the importance of solidarity among Nigerians, independent of their tribal or regional affiliations. They praised him as a prominent nationalist with a strong history of leadership that honors the nation’s diverse cultural and religious landscape.
“Senator Akpabio recognizes the advantages of fostering brotherhood among all Nigerians, regardless of their differences,” the group stated, highlighting that his respect for Nigeria’s diversity predates his tenure as Senate President, dating back to his time as Governor of Akwa Ibom State.
The forum urged northern leaders to disregard the allegations, branding them a smear campaign aimed at sowing discord amidst the upcoming elections. They appealed to the northern elite to back President Bola Tinubu’s candidacy for a second term, emphasizing the importance of justice, equity, and the longstanding political collaboration between Northern and Southern Nigeria.
Reiterating their unwavering support for both Tinubu and Akpabio, the forum expressed its dedication to fostering mutual understanding and peaceful coexistence among Nigeria’s diverse ethnic groups. “The Isong Annan Ethnic Forum stands united with President Bola Tinubu and Senator Godswill Akpabio, committed to promoting harmony among all ethnicities and regions,” the statement concluded.
