Campaign Launches to Address Major Complaints Against FIFA
As the World Cup approaches, campaigners are initiating a movement aimed at addressing what they describe as FIFA’s most significant complaint to date. Fans have voiced serious concerns regarding tournament safety and the high cost of tickets. Additionally, various human rights organizations have actively lodged complaints against FIFA, with a notable class-action lawsuit demanding an investigation into the actions of president Gianni Infantino.
Fairsquare Leads the Way in Reform Efforts
The “Restart FIFA” campaign was officially unveiled on Thursday, spearheaded by the advocacy group Fairsquare. This organization has been vocally critiquing FIFA’s governance practices since prior to the 2022 World Cup in Qatar. The campaign is backed by an advisory panel comprising activists and writers, including noted historian David Goldblatt and whistleblower Bonita Merciades. They are hoping to gather a significant number of names to bolster this initiative, aiming for it to become the largest complaint ever filed against a senior FIFA official.
Upcoming Submission to FIFA’s Ethics Committee
The campaign aims to submit its formal complaint to the FIFA Ethics Committee following the World Cup. This updated complaint will build upon an earlier submission made late last year. Fairsquare has alleged that Infantino violated Article 15 of the FIFA Code of Ethics on multiple occasions, which mandates that staff members maintain political neutrality. The complaints were intensified by Infantino’s participation in a peace summit organized by Donald Trump, after which the former U.S. president received the FIFA Peace Prize.
Widespread Discontent and Call for Change
Nick McGeehan, director of Fairsquare, expressed the widespread anger and frustration surrounding issues such as the exorbitant pricing of World Cup tickets, alongside FIFA’s contentious decision to award a peace prize to a figure associated with conflict. He stated that the campaign aims to harness this discontent, redirecting it toward generating political pressure that can drive meaningful changes within FIFA.
Proposed Reforms for Greater Transparency
Fairsquare has proposed several reforms aimed at enhancing FIFA’s transparency and accountability. Suggestions include rigorous audits of the organization’s financial dealings, a clear separation between FIFA’s commercial and regulatory functions, and improved engagement with the media to foster public accountability.
Support from Norwegian Football Federation
Fairsquare’s initiatives have garnered support from prominent figures, including Lise Klavenes, president of the Norwegian Football Federation, who is also an advocate for reform within FIFA. The NFF has sent a letter to the FIFA Ethics Committee backing the campaign’s complaint. On the eve of Norway’s departure for the World Cup, Klavenes remarked on the letter’s impact, noting that it had sparked political reactions. She emphasized the importance of following up on this matter post-World Cup to maintain momentum.
FIFA Responds to Criticism
FIFA has been approached for comments regarding these developments. In launching the FIFA Peace Prize, Infantino remarked that the award aims to honor those who unite people and foster hope for future generations. Defending his decision to bestow this honor on Trump, Infantino asserted that the former president played a crucial role in conflict resolution, saving numerous lives. He further justified his close relationship with Trump, claiming it is essential for the success of the World Cup.
