Cloudflare Reports AI Traffic Surpassing Human Users
Cloudflare has announced a noteworthy milestone: for the first time, website traffic generated by AI agents and bots has eclipsed that created by human users. This rapid shift underscores the significant and swift advancements within artificial intelligence technology.
Unexpected Surge in Bot Traffic
“That happened sooner than I expected,” stated Matthew Prince, co-founder and CEO of Cloudflare, in a recent post on X. Initially, he anticipated that this shift wouldn’t occur until late 2027. However, the growth in bot-generated traffic has accelerated at an unprecedented rate, leading to a momentous event in internet history where bots now dominate online traffic.
AI Agents and Their Growing Presence
The surge in traffic can be attributed to the increasing prevalence of AI agents—automated systems that utilize high-level programs and data with minimal human intervention. Cloudflare’s analytics reveal that currently, 57.4% of online requests are made by these bots, in contrast to 42.6% from human users.
Differences in Browsing Behavior
While a typical human visitor may explore around five websites before making a purchase, an AI service could navigate an astonishing 5,000 sites. The exact timeline for when AI-generated traffic will permanently outnumber human activity remains uncertain. In response to inquiries on social media, Prince noted that the available data is somewhat inconsistent, indicating a definitive shift in online activity.

In an interview with NBC News, Prince expressed his astonishment at the rapid growth of non-human traffic. He observed that between 2015 and 2025, the size of the web actually decreased. A report from the Pew Research Center corroborates this, revealing that 38% of the web pages existing in 2013 have since become inaccessible due to deleted content or broken links. Prince mentioned that a reversal of this trend has begun in the last half year, fueled by newfound advancements in AI.
