Nigerian Police Arrest Individual Linked to AI-Generated Audio Controversy
The Nigerian Police Force has apprehended Ifechukwu Dennis, the individual believed to be behind an artificial intelligence-generated audio recording that falsely imitated President Bola Tinubu. This recording made inflammatory claims and has ignited widespread debate across social media platforms.
The arrest was publicized on Thursday by Bayo Onanuga, the Special Assistant to the President on Intelligence and Strategy. According to Onanuga, police investigators were able to trace the origin of the fabricated audio that circulated online, falsely claiming to be leaked recordings of the president.
In an update shared via X (formerly Twitter), Onanuga stated, “The IGP Crack Team has arrested Ifechukwu Dennis who sent out a fake audio that was passed off as President Tinubu’s voice to gullible targets.” This development comes during a period of heightened scrutiny and discussion regarding misinformation in the political landscape.
This incident marks a pivotal moment in a controversy that has captured public attention since May 27. On that day, a viral video featuring social media activist Martins Vincent Otse, known as Very Dark Man (VDM), began circulating. The clip contained an AI-generated voice closely resembling that of President Tinubu, making vitriolic claims.
In the recording, the voice, attributed to the president, purportedly makes a variety of incendiary accusations, including the assertion that insecurity in southeastern Nigeria is being deliberately maintained, a claim of influencing Labor Party presidential candidate Peter Obi’s withdrawal from the 2023 elections, and an expressed indifference to the economic struggles facing Nigerians. The gravity of these assertions ignited an uproar and intense debate online, with many initially accepting the recording as authentic.
However, subsequent investigations by several news organizations and fact-checkers determined that the audio had been digitally manipulated using advanced AI technology. Although the initial narrative suggested that Very Dark Man had played a role in the audio’s distribution, further findings clarified that unidentified individuals had taken footage from original Instagram videos and superimposed AI-generated audio before disseminating the altered clips online.
This uncovered reality countered earlier assumptions connecting social media influencers to the fabrication of these misleading recordings. Amid the fallout, the presidential administration has called for legal action against individuals involved in spreading the manipulated content. Onanuga characterized this incident as a severe misuse of social media, emphasizing the growing threat posed by artificial intelligence tools in disseminating misinformation.
The episode has also drawn criticism after a fact-checking organization confirmed that the original video released by Very Dark Man did not contain the fabricated audio unfairly attributed to Tinubu. As of now, authorities have yet to disclose specific details regarding the operation that led to Dennis’ arrest or any potential charges he may face. Additionally, it remains unclear whether further suspects are under investigation related to the creation and dissemination of these misleading recordings.
