David Sullivan Resigns from West Ham Board Amid Allegations
Former adult entertainment mogul David Sullivan has announced his immediate resignation as co-chairman and director of West Ham United Football Club.
In a statement from Sullivan and his legal team, the 77-year-old billionaire explained that he is stepping down to focus entirely on addressing “false allegations” regarding his personal conduct. These claims are set to be featured in a joint investigation by BBC Panorama and The Times scheduled for broadcast on Monday.
Sullivan, who initially gained wealth in the adult industry before launching a sports newspaper, emphasized his decision to resign was made “in the interest of transparency.” While he did not elaborate on the nature of the allegations, he categorically denied them, labeling the claims as “factually incorrect and completely false.” He indicated that he would pursue legal action against any media outlet that disseminates or publishes these allegations.
In his statement, Sullivan reflected on his extensive career, stating, “I have spent my life building a business in the adult industry and have met thousands of women along the way. It is unfortunate but expected that a small number of allegations of inappropriate conduct will be made against me.” He asserted his identity as a “private citizen” rather than a “caricature concocted by a tabloid.” Sullivan expressed dissatisfaction with the media’s portrayal of him, claiming he had not received appropriate briefings on how the allegations were verified or assessed for credibility before publication. “I believe the entire process is fundamentally unfair and completely lacking in due impartiality,” he stated.
He reiterated his intention to sue the BBC for defamation, as well as other media outlets that have made damaging claims. Despite the personal turmoil, Sullivan remarked on his commitment to West Ham, describing the club as one of his greatest passions and stressing the significance of maintaining stability during this crucial period for the team. “Therefore, after very careful consideration and with a heavy heart, I have decided to step down,” he said. “This has been an incredibly difficult decision, but it is one made out of love, respect, and responsibility for a football club and fan base that deserves our absolute unity and focus going forward.”
West Ham’s fanbase has expressed increasing dissatisfaction with Sullivan’s leadership, which escalated following the club’s relegation from the Premier League last month. The departure of several executives, including Vice Chairman Karen Brady in April, reflects ongoing unrest within the organization. Sources indicate that significant turmoil existed behind the scenes in the days leading up to Sullivan’s resignation, as the club faces challenges related to rebuilding after relegation.
Despite stepping down from the board, Sullivan remains West Ham’s largest shareholder, amidst growing concerns about the club’s financial stability following their relegation. Club insiders have reported that a potential buyer previously sought to acquire part of the Gold family’s stake, which could have weakened Sullivan’s influence. Uncertainties surrounding an agreement exacerbate the situation, particularly as the team faces considerable financial challenges, including a projected £104.2 million loss.
A strategic discussion at the board level is anticipated next week to address potential changes regarding West Ham’s management and football structure following Sullivan’s resignation. Sources suggest that Sullivan’s sons have taken a more visible role in club operations in recent years, with Jack Sullivan actively engaged in the search for a new sporting director. However, ongoing tensions with Czech billionaire Daniel Krzetinski may influence the direction of football decisions, particularly after West Ham’s recent challenges.
As Sullivan navigates these allegations and his resignation, he conveyed gratitude to all associated with West Ham United for their loyalty and support, emphasizing his enduring connection to the club. He reserved the right to pursue further legal actions regarding the allegations, and a club spokesperson clarified that Sullivan’s resignation was intended to prevent disruption as the situation is addressed privately. Meanwhile, a BBC spokesperson confirmed that the results of the impending investigation into Sullivan’s conduct will be released soon.
