China Promotes Language Learning for Nigerian Youth
China is urging Nigerian youth to seize opportunities presented by language learning and cultural exchange programs. This initiative aims to enhance international prospects and fortify ties between the two nations, particularly in light of Nnamdi Azikiwe University students’ top performance in this year’s Chinese Bridge Language Competition.
Competition Celebrates 55 Years of Nigeria-China Diplomatic Relations
The call for greater engagement was made during the 19th Chinese Bridge Junior High School Chinese Proficiency Competition and Interuniversity Chinese Competition, held at the Chinese Cultural Center in Abuja. The event attracted students, diplomats, educators, and cultural professionals from across Nigeria, coinciding with the 55th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Nigeria and China, as well as the Year of China-Africa People-to-People Exchanges.
Platform to Strengthen Mutual Understanding
Yang Jianxing, a representative of the Chinese Embassy and the Chinese Cultural Center in Nigeria, highlighted the competition as a vital platform for fostering mutual understanding between the two countries. He encouraged participants to persist in their studies of the Chinese language and culture, emphasizing that their efforts embody courage, determination, and a genuine desire for global engagement.
Language as a Bridge for Cultural Connection
Yang further noted that language serves as a powerful tool for bridging cultural divides and nurturing deeper connections among people. He expressed confidence that the competition would enhance friendship and cooperation between Nigeria and China. Additionally, he praised the contributions of Nnamdi Azikiwe University and the Confucius Institute at the University of Lagos in promoting Chinese language education, which has significantly increased the interest in learning Chinese among Nigerian students.
Promoting Harmony and Cooperation
During the inter-university competition, themed “One World, One Family,” Yang articulated a vision of harmony, cooperation, and mutual respect among nations. He reminded contestants that they are not merely learning a new language but also playing a vital role in fostering the long-established friendship between Nigeria and China, positioning them as ambassadors of future cultural exchanges.
