Trump Suggests Government Ties to Capitol Attackers
In a recent interview on NBC News’ “Meet the Press,” President Donald Trump did not dismiss the notion that the government may be supporting individuals charged with assaulting police officers during the January 6, 2021, Capitol attack. He also claimed, without providing evidence, that the recent California election was “rigged.”
The President defended his administration’s so-called “anti-weaponization” fund, asserting that the protesters who stormed the Capitol have been unjustly targeted by prosecutors and deserve financial restitution. This comment came in response to host Kristen Welker’s inquiry about the appropriateness of using taxpayer funds for such restitution.
“I hate to say that, but we’ll have to see,” Trump remarked when asked if taxpayer money should compensate those who assaulted law enforcement on that day. He then described the 2020 presidential election as “dirty,” particularly in light of the Californian election held last Tuesday where results continued to be counted days later.
“Is it acceptable for them to conduct an election and still not have a winner determined five days later?” he questioned, highlighting his ongoing concerns regarding electoral integrity.
Trump Weighs in on Federal Reserve Policy
In the same interview, Trump expressed apprehension about the Federal Reserve potentially raising interest rates but affirmed his confidence in Fed Chairman Kevin Warsh, stating that he should be free to make his own decisions. “Kevin is great. I want him to do whatever he wants to do,” Trump said, while lamenting that positive economic news seems to trigger fears of a rate hike.
The latest employment report showed a resilient labor market, with an increase of 172,000 jobs and a stable unemployment rate, amid concerns about rising oil and gas prices linked to ongoing global tensions.
“Good news now seems to lead to market declines because investors worry interest rates will rise,” Trump noted. He advocated against raising interest rates, insisting that it would be unjustifiable given the current economic indicators.
Trump Addresses Potential Cooperation with Iran
In another part of the interview, Trump stated that the United States would cooperate with Iran to recover and eliminate highly enriched uranium if a suitable agreement could be reached to end the ongoing conflict. He emphasized that if a deal materializes, the U.S. would take responsibility for safely collecting and destroying the material.
If negotiations do not succeed, Trump indicated that the U.S. might take unilateral action to mitigate Iran’s military capabilities.
Political Landscape and Domestic Developments
Following his departure from office, President Trump issued a pardon to Steven Byer, a former Indiana congressman convicted of illegal stock trading based on insider information. Meanwhile, New York City Mayor Zoran Mamdani is actively courting endorsements from local congressional representatives. In Albania, plans initiated by Trump’s son-in-law, Jared Kushner, for a $1.6 billion luxury resort have sparked protests.
Middle East Tensions Escalate
The Israeli military reported multiple missile strikes from Iran that followed Israeli airstrikes in Beirut. This retaliation raises concerns about the stability of recently established ceasefires in the region. The Israeli military announced it had activated its air defense systems to intercept Iranian missile launches.
Trump urged both nations to de-escalate tensions and refocus on negotiations. He expressed that Iran’s missile actions undermine diplomatic efforts, calling for them to “get back to the table and reach a deal.”
