Senator Applauds Governor’s Preemptive School Closures Amid Security Concerns
Senator Joseph Ikpea, representing Edo State Central Senatorial District in the House of Assembly, has praised Governor Monday Okpeboro for his decisive action in closing several secondary schools following a red alert issued by the Department of State Services (DSS) regarding potential attacks by bandits targeting educational institutions in the state.
Senator Ikpea noted that the governor’s decision to shut down vulnerable schools highlights both strong leadership and a deep commitment to the principles of governance that prioritize public safety and welfare. In a statement issued from Benin, the capital of Edo State, he emphasized the need for a serious response to the DSS’s warning, given the precarious security landscape in Nigeria.
In his remarks, Senator Ikpea commended Governor Okpeboro for his rapid response, specifically citing the closure of three secondary schools in the Akoko-Edo area. He pointed to the DSS’s alert regarding potential threats from criminal elements aiming to abduct children in the Edo North Senatorial District as a significant impetus for this decision.
Senator Ikpea acknowledged the challenges posed by this directive, particularly as students across Nigeria are currently engaged in national and subcontinental examinations. However, he underscored the necessity for such measures, suggesting it is far better for governors to take precautionary actions rather than allowing incidents of violence to occur.
He urged citizens, particularly voters in the Edo Central Senatorial District, to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities to security agencies. He stressed the importance of collective responsibility in addressing security challenges, urging Nigerians to consider vigilance a civic duty in light of the threats facing the nation.
While addressing the community, Senator Ikpea encouraged the citizens of Edo Central not to dismiss the DSS’s alert as merely relevant to the Edo North constituency, emphasizing that the motivations behind kidnapping do not adhere to tribal or regional boundaries. He called on residents to be aware of their surroundings and proactively report any unusual individuals or activities to local authorities.
In his closing remarks, Senator Ikpea praised the DSS and other security agencies for their collaboration with the state government to enhance safety in Edo State. He reiterated his commitment to supporting ongoing efforts to eliminate criminal elements, ensuring a secure environment for all residents.
The concerns raised by the DSS were substantiated in a leaked memorandum suggesting that a plot had been uncovered to kidnap students at a public school within the Edo North Senatorial District. This document revealed that communications from two suspects involved in the operation had been intercepted, and a person was reportedly spotted conducting surveillance at one of the targeted schools.
