Incident in Baltimore School Parking Lot Draws Criticism
The detention of two immigration officials outside a Baltimore school during a kindergarten and preschool promotion ceremony has ignited significant backlash from local and state authorities. The incident occurred Thursday morning and has raised urgent questions about the appropriateness of immigration enforcement in sensitive areas such as schools.
Immigration Agents Chase Family into School Parking Lot
According to witnesses and authorities, immigration agents pursued an undocumented immigrant and his family into the parking lot of Brigadier General John Rogers Elementary and Middle School. Agents removed the parents from their vehicle, alarming those present as they prepared for the day’s ceremonies.
Children Witness Disturbing Scene
Video footage captured the scene as children, excited for their end-of-year festivities, hurried past agents marked with “ICE” and “police” vests. A woman was apprehended in an SUV with broken windows, her hands restrained behind her back. Children were seen screaming in response to the unfolding events.
Officials and Educators Express Outrage
Maryland Sen. Bill Ferguson shared his concerns on social media, stating that educators acted quickly to protect two children left in the SUV after their parents’ arrest, calling it a “truly unconscionable” situation. These children are now in the custody of an aunt, following the parents’ ability to notify relatives, according to the Department of Homeland Security.
Charges Filed Against Detainees
A DHS spokeswoman, Lauren Biss, reported that the man involved, Jesus Acevedo-Sanchez, allegedly resisted arrest and used his vehicle to evade law enforcement, which led to dragging ICE officers along with him. He faces federal charges that include resisting a federal officer and destruction of government property. Another individual in the vehicle is also facing charges for assaulting a federal officer.
School Officials React to the Incident
Baltimore City Public Schools spokeswoman Shelley Christian stated it remains unclear if the family had any prior connection to the school before the incident. She noted that the situation unfolded as families were arriving for promotion ceremonies. In response to the incident, Maryland Governor Wes Moore called it “alarming” and indicated ongoing discussions with ICE regarding the circumstances of the arrests.
Federal Authorities Respond to Community Concerns
ICE officials have apologized to state and school authorities for the incident occurring on school grounds, with Biss clarifying that while schools are not targeted, their priority remains the safety of children. Principal Mark Martin expressed deep disappointment over the event and sought assurances that similar occurrences would not happen in the future.
Community Reaction and Support
In a statement on social media, Baltimore Mayor Brandon Scott expressed support for the affected families and condemned the arrests made on school grounds. He emphasized that schools should be safe environments conducive to learning, rather than places of immigration enforcement. The mayor’s comments reflect broader community concerns around the incident, further highlighting the need for clear guidelines regarding immigration actions in sensitive areas.
