African Democratic Congress Critiques Nigeria’s Democracy Under Tinubu
The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has delivered a candid critique of Nigeria’s current political landscape, asserting that democracy has failed to enhance the lives of everyday Nigerians during President Bola Tinubu’s tenure.
Democratic Progress Questioned
In a letter marking Democracy Day, Bolaji Abdullahi, the party’s National Publicity Secretary, emphasized that the true measure of democracy lies not in the years since the end of military rule, but in its lasting impact on citizens’ daily lives. The ADC urged Nigerians to reflect on their current circumstances, asking if they feel safer, more prosperous, and more trusting of their government compared to the past.
Public Sentiment Revealed
“Twenty-seven years since the restoration of democracy and three years into President Tinubu’s leadership, we pose these critical questions: Are you better off now? Do you feel safer? Is your trust in the government stronger than before?” the ADC questioned. The response to these inquiries, according to the party, is undeniably bleak: a resounding no.
Concerns Over Insecurity and Economic Hardship
Opposition parties have attributed the rising insecurity, economic struggles, and diminishing trust in democratic institutions to the administration of the All Progressives Congress (APC). The ADC expressed alarm over escalating violence, kidnappings, and criminal activity throughout the country. “Every day, countless Nigerians face violence and abduction, while criminals dictate terms for ransom negotiations,” the party lamented.
The Deteriorating State of the Economy
The ADC painted a grim picture of Nigeria’s economic state, arguing that millions are grappling with a severe cost of living crisis. Prices for essential goods such as food, transportation, housing, healthcare, and education have soared. “Workers are witnessing the decline of their incomes, while small businesses struggle for survival. Many parents find themselves making impossible choices between supporting their families and paying school fees,” the statement added.
Youth Disillusionment and Emigration
Highlighting the plight of young Nigerians, the ADC noted that many are leaving the country in search of better opportunities abroad. “Our youth, who should be the catalysts for national rejuvenation and growth, are facing a future clouded by uncertainty. Many are unable to secure meaningful employment; others have given up on finding opportunities within our borders,” Abdullahi stated.
A Call for Leadership Reform and Accountability
According to the ADC, the challenges Nigeria faces are not unavoidable; they stem directly from ineffective leadership and policies. “The hardships endured by our citizens reflect the mismanagement and indifference of the ruling party. Their inability to provide effective solutions to pressing issues is evident, with mere rhetoric offered in place of real change,” the report asserted.
Proposed Vision for a Better Future
In response to these challenges, the ADC has proposed an alternative vision for the country, advocating for security measures that are intelligence-driven, technology-based, and grounded in community involvement. They emphasized that economic policies should prioritize alleviating hardship and enhancing well-being. The party insists that the success of security spending should be measured by actual improvements in safety, not merely budget allocations.
Commitment to Building Public Trust
The ADC pledged to implement reforms aimed at increasing transparency, accountability, and public confidence in democratic institutions. “Governments should be evaluated based on tangible outcomes rather than mere rhetoric. We must ensure that Nigerians are safer, more prosperous, and can believe in a positive direction for their country,” the letter concluded.
Honoring Democratic Sacrifices
The ADC reaffirmed that honoring the sacrifices made during the June 12 democratic struggle necessitates an honest evaluation of Nigeria’s current state and a commitment to building a democracy that offers security, prosperity, and opportunities for all Nigerians.
