Hamilton Highlights the Challenge Facing Ferrari Against Mercedes
Lewis Hamilton has emphasized that Ferrari must deliver an immaculate performance to contend with Mercedes at the upcoming Barcelona-Catalunya Grand Prix. However, he remains optimistic about Ferrari potentially securing their first victory this season.
In a notable qualifying session, Hamilton clocked in just 0.064 seconds behind pole-sitter George Russell, marking his closest attempt to claim pole since joining Ferrari in 2025. He managed to outpace championship leader Kimi Antonelli, placing him in a strategic position among the two Mercedes drivers.
This qualification is a continuation of Hamilton’s recent strong performances, having finished second in the last two races in Montreal and Monaco. Hamilton spoke to Sky Sports F1 about the challenges ahead, noting, “We have a lot of work to do to get ahead of [Mercedes]. Historically, the winners of the last 35 F1 races at the Barcelona-Catalunya circuit have emerged from the front row. The challenging 600-meter run to Turn 1 heightens the excitement of the race. Last year, Russell started third and managed to pass both Lando Norris and Max Verstappen to seize the lead.
Although Ferrari previously held a competitive edge due to their smaller turbo, Mercedes has caught up significantly in terms of performance. Despite this, Hamilton insists that “the battle continues” as he aims to match the raw pace of the Silver Arrows.

With Kimi Antonelli securing five consecutive wins and maintaining a commanding lead in the drivers’ championship, Mercedes remains undeterred. Team principal Toto Wolff pointed out that Hamilton’s minor mistake in Q3 likely prevented him from claiming pole position, cautioning that challenges still lie ahead for the Ferrari driver during the race.
Wolff remarked, “Lewis is always a contender. If he has the right mindset and the car suits him, he’ll be a force to reckon with.” Hamilton’s impressive performance in qualifying underscored his potential to challenge for the victory, particularly if he can capitalize on a strong start.
