Trump Administration Achieves Year of Zero Border Releases
Last month, the Trump administration celebrated a significant milestone—one full year of no releases at the southern border. This marks the end of the catch-and-release policy for individuals illegally crossing into the United States.
Contrast with the Current Administration
This development reflects a stark contrast to the ongoing challenges faced under the Biden administration, which has encountered persistent chaos and crises at the border.
Substantial Decrease in Border Crossings
Statistics reveal that U.S. Border Patrol operations along the southwest border in April recorded a staggering 94 percent decrease compared to the monthly average during the previous administration, and a 96 percent decline from the peak observed in December 2023.
Efforts to Enhance Border Security
Despite the prevailing narrative that meaningful border security necessitates new immigration legislation, both Congress and President Trump have acted swiftly to demonstrate that enforcing existing laws and allocating requisite resources can yield significant results.
Funding and Prioritization of Security Initiatives
A critical element of the Working Families Tax Cut was the allocation of billions for border security improvements. This investment supports barriers, technology, personnel, and facility enhancements. The administration has prioritized border security, implementing strategies to deter illegal immigration and restore operational control that had eroded under previous leadership.
The Most Secure Border in History
The outcomes of these initiatives are undeniable—today’s border is the most secure it has ever been. Ensuring border security is not merely an immigration issue; it is fundamentally linked to national security, necessitating collaboration between state and federal entities.
Bipartisan Support for National Security Initiatives
Unfortunately, efforts to fortify border security have faced roadblocks from Democratic colleagues, compelling Republicans in Congress to exert additional effort to achieve positive outcomes. While we successfully passed 11 of the 12 fiscal year 2026 spending bills with bipartisan backing, the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) experienced months of stagnation due to an unwillingness to reach consensus.
Legislation to Secure Border Funding
Upon finally reaching an agreement to reactivate DHS, we proceeded without full-year funding for U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) and Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). Ensuring the funding for protecting our communities from illegal immigration, potential terrorism, drug trafficking, and human trafficking should transcend political divides. Nevertheless, Senate Democrats opted to prioritize political maneuvering over substantive negotiations.
Support for Border Security Personnel
Comments from Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) suggesting a lack of respect for border patrol agents and immigration officials were misguided and inaccurate. Senate Republicans firmly support the dedicated individuals striving to safeguard our borders and uphold the law, ensuring the safety of American citizens against the risks of reckless open border policies. I am proud to have voted in favor of the Safe America Act, which received bipartisan approval and was signed into law to secure funding for border security and immigration enforcement devoid of political obstruction.
Looking Ahead to Bipartisan Solutions
I am optimistic about potential renewed bipartisan cooperation regarding national security, vital for the well-being of Arkansans and all Americans. The stakes are too high to gamble with our country’s safety.
