Achievements of Ogun-Osun River Basin Development Authority Highlighted
Mr. Deji Asiru, Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of the Ogun-Osun River Basin Development Authority (OORBDA), recently showcased a range of developmental initiatives and interventions implemented by the agency over the past two years. These accomplishments underscore the Federal Government’s commitment to advancing agricultural development, enhancing water supply, empowering youth, and transforming rural communities.
Focus on Economic Growth and Sustainability
In a statement marking his second anniversary in office, Asiru emphasized the agency’s mission to reposition itself as a catalyst for economic growth and sustainable development throughout the South-West region. He noted significant milestones in water supply, agricultural mechanization, infrastructure improvements, renewable energy, and human capital development.
Water Infrastructure and Agricultural Mechanization Initiatives
Asiru reported that OORBDA has successfully installed over 400 solar-powered wells in various communities, granting thousands of residents access to clean drinking water. Additionally, 16 agricultural tractors have been deployed, with another 60 procured to bolster food production and agricultural activities, highlighting the agency’s commitment to enhancing agricultural mechanization.
Promoting Food Security and Modern Farming Techniques
In its efforts toward food security, the agency has cultivated more than 5,000 hectares of agricultural land and broadened access to modern agricultural technologies. Asiru noted that these initiatives are vital for improving agricultural productivity and ensuring sustainability. Furthermore, over 100 modern greenhouse farms have been established, with plans for an additional 200 to promote climate-smart farming methodologies.
Investments in Irrigation and Infrastructure Development
The authority has embarked on developing 12 irrigation dams, with four completed and eight ongoing. Asiru detailed the installation of sprinkler irrigation systems covering over 50 hectares of farm land, alongside the construction of more than 10 kilometers of access roads and 25 kilometers of drainage infrastructure. These developments not only support agricultural activities but also enhance rural connectivity.
Empowering Youth and Women for Economic Growth
Empowerment programs for youth and women remain a core focus of Asiru’s administration. More than 200 youth have graduated from programs designed to foster entrepreneurship and self-reliance. Additionally, over 1,000 individuals have received vocational tools, industrial machinery, and laptops, promoting digital inclusion and economic empowerment. Asiru stressed that empowering this demographic is key to achieving sustainable development in the region.
Innovative Energy Development Initiatives
Asiru cited the concession of the Ikere Valley Dam for a proposed 250 MW hydropower project as a landmark achievement of his administration. He underscored the potential of this project to reshape the region’s energy landscape and stimulate economic growth. In addition, more than 10,000 solar-powered street lights have been installed across various communities, improving safety and fostering socio-economic activities.
Commitment to President Tinubu’s Development Agenda
Reflecting on the impact of OORBDA’s interventions, Asiru emphasized that these efforts encompass transformative stories of lives improved and communities revitalized. He reiterated the authority’s commitment to pursuing projects aligned with President Bola Tinubu’s “New Hope” agenda.
