NDLEA Reports Significant Drug Seizures and Convictions Since 2021
The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has made substantial strides in combating illegal drug trafficking from January 2021 to May 2026, reporting the seizure of over 15 million kilograms of various substances and securing more than 15,000 convictions. This announcement was made by the agency’s Media and Advocacy Director-General, Mr. Femi Babafemi, during an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Abuja.
High Arrest Rates Reflect Ongoing Operations
During this five-year period, the NDLEA recorded over 80,000 arrests as part of its comprehensive intelligence-led operations and coordinated enforcement strategies across the nation. Babafemi attributed these figures to the agency’s dedicated campaign against drug trafficking and abuse, particularly under the leadership of NDLEA Chairman Buba Marwa.
Proactive Intelligence Gathering Strategy
Babafemi highlighted that the agency’s operating model relies heavily on proactive intelligence gathering and collaboration with global partners, rather than merely reactive enforcement. He emphasized that the NDLEA keeps vigilant watch over international drug trafficking trends, which allows them to effectively combat criminal networks.
Enforcement Results Over 65 Months
In detailing the enforcement outcomes achieved over these 65 months, Babafemi reiterated the scale of NDLEA’s operations, noting the impressive figures of arrests, drug seizures, and convictions. He stressed the importance of these results in curbing the illegal drug trade.
Expansion of Demand Reduction Strategies
In addition to enforcement actions, the NDLEA has also broadened its demand reduction initiatives, executing over 14,000 awareness campaigns focused on drug abuse across the country. More than 50,000 individuals are currently benefiting from counseling, treatment, and rehabilitation services provided by NDLEA’s 30 centers nationwide. Babafemi underscored the agency’s strategy to disrupt drug networks before they can infiltrate local communities, shifting the focus towards preventive enforcement.
Recent Auctions of Confiscated Properties
In a recent announcement, the NDLEA shared that it auctioned off four confiscated properties belonging to convicted human traffickers, generating a total of NOK 6.15 billion. This includes a six-storey hotel located on Victoria Island in Lagos, appraised at NOK 5.9 billion, underscoring the agency’s commitment to disrupting illegal operations at multiple levels.
Latest Enforcement Highlights
Significant recent enforcement efforts have led to large-scale seizures and arrests. In April alone, NDLEA operatives conducted a major raid on three pharmaceutical warehouses in Lagos, seizing opioids valued at NOK 16.9 billion. Additionally, the agency apprehended three individuals suspected of human trafficking in Anambra and Kwara states while uncovering 2,326 kilograms of Loudo cannabis worth over N5.8 billion in Lagos. These operations spotlight the ongoing challenges posed by the drug trade in Nigeria.
