Bow Echo Clinches St James’s Palace Stakes at Royal Ascot
Bow Echo secured a hard-fought victory at Royal Ascot, narrowly confirming his impressive form from Gstaad during a thrilling finish in the St James’s Palace Stakes. The 5/6 favorite, Billy Loughnane, known for electrifying crowds during the 2000 Guineas, faced a challenging start from his stall but quickly regained composure under the young jockey’s guidance.
Throughout the race, Loughnane strategically positioned himself on the outside to avoid congestion, while accomplished jockey Ryan Moore took a bold route on the inside. However, he encountered turbulence when stablemate Puerto Rico veered off course.
Bowe Echo established an early lead, but as the race progressed, Newmarket’s Gstaad made a relentless charge, closing the gap within the final 100 yards. The finish was so close that a photo finish was required to determine whether Bow Echo had won by a narrow margin, thus preserving his unbeaten streak.
“It was a close call today, but fortunately, he came out on the right side,” said a relieved Boogie, reflecting on the race. “I felt confident as we approached the furlong, but then Ryan started making his move. Aidan (O’Brien) has always said his horse is tenacious, and he deserves commendation for finishing strong.” Boogie further praised Loughnane’s ride, noting, “We wanted him to stay clear of the inner rail. He’s a superstar, and he proved it today.”
Ten Bob Tony Stuns in the Queen Anne Stakes
Ten Bob Tony delivered a remarkable performance in the Queen Anne Stakes, pulling off an unexpected victory at odds of 50/1. This event marked trainer Ed Walker’s debut at a mile, and he was pleasantly surprised by the outcome. The five-year-old, owned by Simon Sadler, creator of Blackpool Football Club, was contesting the distance only for the third time, following his last attempt in May 2024.
Initially, Opera Baro set a demanding pace under Billy Loughnane, maintaining the lead until the final furlong. However, Ten Bob Tony surged from the back of the pack to take the lead and ultimately won by half a length. His previous impressive finish in the Rockinge Stakes (as a 9/4 favorite) underscored his potential, though he was not competing at that level at the time.
Walker expressed his excitement, stating, “I’ve lost my voice; it’s only the first day! I didn’t expect this outcome. We positioned ourselves well since Epsom, and Simon Sadler’s passion for sports really shines through.” Walker reminisced about last year’s venture with a different horse, noting how Sadler was eager to pursue these challenges.
Aidan O’Brien and Ryan Moore Complete the Set
Mission Central triumphed in the King Charles III Stakes, achieving a significant victory for trainers Aidan O’Brien and Ryan Moore at Royal Ascot. This win completed a full set of Group 1 victories for the duo at this prestigious event.
As the race neared its conclusion, it appeared that Australia had the upper hand with Overpass leading the pack alongside 2024 Asfora. However, the 14/1 shot, a three-year-old gelding from Ballydoyle, made a decisive move along the stand’s rail, narrowly beating French challenger Laevka by a head. Overpass finished a close third, cementing O’Brien’s legacy with 98 Royal Ascot winners to date.
O’Brien praised the efforts of his team and Moore’s tactical brilliance, commenting, “There’s a lot of hard work behind this horse, and I’m thrilled for everyone involved. Ryan delivered an outstanding ride, knowing when to motivate the horse in the last furlong.” He further noted the possibility of entering Mission Central in the prestigious Everest race scheduled for later this year.
O’Brien’s Success Continues with Multiple Wins
In addition to the previous victories, O’Brien also clinched the Coventry Stakes with the undefeated Great Barrier Reef. Early leader Jaan Ki Thukri set the pace, while Confucius, another of O’Brien’s horses, made strong moves but was ultimately eclipsed by Wayne Rodan’s assertive ride. Great Barrier Reef triumphed by half a length, enhancing O’Brien’s already impressive tally at Royal Ascot.
Kizlyar added to the victories, defeating stablemate Defiantly in the Ascot Stakes, marking a notable triumph for Joseph O’Brien. The race showcased Kizlyar’s resilience, as he made a remarkable comeback down the stretch after Defiantly had initially taken the lead.
Showcasing the global nature of horse racing, Map of Stars, owned by Qatar-based Wasnan Racing, returned to form during the Wolferton Stakes. Trained in France by Francis-Henri Graffard and piloted by New Zealand’s James McDonald, Map of Stars showcased his capabilities with a narrow victory after a year of near misses in Group 1 races.
In another showcase of competition, Daiquiribey, mounted by Rossa Ryan, emerged victorious in the Copper Horse Stakes, bringing Alan King a commendable win, further testament to the thrilling nature of this year’s Royal Ascot.
