Liverpool has activated a release clause for Osasuna winger Victor Muñoz, successfully outmaneuvering Newcastle, who were reportedly in contract discussions with the Spanish talent.
The 22-year-old player, currently part of Spain’s World Cup squad, is set to undergo a medical examination in the United States. The transfer fee is expected to be around £34.6 million.
This situation echoes last summer’s transfer window, where Liverpool not only triumphed over Newcastle in their pursuit of Hugo Ekitike but also secured star striker Alexander Isak.
Muñoz initiated his football journey in Barcelona’s La Masia academy at the young age of 11 before transitioning to Real Madrid’s youth setup in 2023. He made his first-team debut in La Liga under current Chelsea manager Xabi Alonso in May 2025, stepping in as a substitute for Vinicius Junior during a match against Barcelona.
Upon signing with Osasuna, Muñoz penned a five-year contract and had a productive last season, featuring in 34 league matches, where he scored six goals and recorded two assists.
Liverpool’s Winger Strategy This Summer
As part of their strategy this summer, Liverpool is looking to bring in two wingers to potentially fill the void left by Mohamed Salah. One of their top targets is Yann Diomande, a promising 19-year-old valued at over £86 million. Diomande is currently competing for Ivory Coast in the World Cup.
His ability to operate on either wing makes him an attractive option for Liverpool, allowing the team to enhance its offensive capabilities while providing head coach Andoni Iraola with versatile options to navigate potential injuries.
In addition to their winger pursuits, Liverpool faces challenges in the right-back position following Conor Bradley’s knee injury in January. The team is also uncertain about Joe Gomez’s future, complicating matters further after summer signing Jeremy Frimpong struggled to secure a permanent position.
While Liverpool hasn’t prioritized signing a center-back after Ibrahima Konate’s departure, the recent £60 million acquisition of Jeremy Jaquet and the return of young talent Giovanni Leoni, who has been recovering from an ACL injury since September, might lead to a reassessment as the season progresses.
With Kostas Tsimikas set to return from his loan at Roma, his performance will dictate the urgency to find a left-back replacement for the departing Andy Robertson. This situation could also benefit Curtis Jones and Harvey Elliott, creating fresh opportunities within a restructured squad under Iraola as they aim for a strong future.
Ryan Gravenberch’s development into a viable No. 6 under manager Arne Slott has shifted Liverpool’s focus away from securing a holding midfielder, though recent performances suggest that reinforcements in that area may become increasingly important as the season unfolds.
