Multiple Arrests Linked to Vandalism at the National Mall Reflecting Pool
WASHINGTON – President Donald Trump announced on Saturday the arrest of several individuals, including an Olympic canoeist, for vandalizing the National Mall’s reflecting pool. This incident exacerbates ongoing challenges surrounding the government’s $14 million renovation project for the site.
Trump Attributes Damage to Vandalism
In two posts on Truth Social, President Trump suggested that vandalism was responsible for the damage to the reflecting pool, asserting without evidence that such actions could lead to “years in prison.”
Controversy Over Destruction of National Monuments
“Who would do something like that? These are very serious crimes involving the destruction of national monuments,” Trump commented in one of his posts. The reflecting pool, which extends 2,000 feet at the base of the Lincoln Memorial, has experienced an algae bloom as workers have been refilling it after applying a new “Stars and Stripes Blue” sealant. Issues with the coating, including peeling and lumps on the water’s surface, have also been noted.
Repair Efforts Underway
Meeting with contractors on Saturday, President Trump indicated that significant water draining may be necessary to facilitate repairs to the pool’s floor. He described the actions of the “horrific vandals” as a serious affront to Presidents George Washington and Abraham Lincoln, insisting that such behavior deserves appropriate consequences.
Details of the Incident
According to Trump, the vandals created a 250-foot incision in the facade of the monument and introduced corrosive chemicals into the pool, both of which endangered the integrity of a structure built with considerable skill, effort, and financial investment.
Olympic Canoist Arrested for Touching Peeling Coating
Among those arrested was David “Davey” Hahn, a three-time Olympic canoeist. He claims he was detained for five hours on Friday after touching some of the peeling coating. Hahn, 67, expressed his curiosity about the ongoing situation at the pool and noted that the condition of the coating did not seem deteriorated after his encounter.
Inconsistencies Surrounding the Arrest
Hahn stated that he was not informed of the specific law he allegedly violated when apprehended by the National Guard. He described being handcuffed without explanation. The National Guard has not responded to requests for comments regarding this arrest, while the U.S. Park Police remain similarly unresponsive to inquiries about the incident.
Renovation Efforts Amid Continuing Challenges
Earlier on Saturday, President Trump shared on social media an article about Hahn’s arrest. He had previously mocked former President Obama regarding the pool’s condition during recent renovation efforts. Last month, Trump visited the site to showcase the restoration progress, claiming the pool would soon feature the color that citizens desired.
As workers continued cleaning the pool on Friday, observers noted that algae had once again begun to turn the water’s surface green, highlighting the ongoing challenges that the National Mall renovation faces.
