Advocacy Campaign Against Drug Abuse Launched in Abuja
Executive Director of Spotlight Education and Youth Development Initiative (SEYDI), Tony Anyanwu, participated in a significant advocacy campaign against drug abuse in Abuja on Saturday. The event brought together government agencies, development partners, students, and civil society organizations, all emphasizing the need for increased youth involvement in the fight against substance abuse.
Collaborative Efforts Mark United Nations Day Against Drug Abuse
The awareness walk was organized by the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), in partnership with the MTN Foundation and the African University of Science and Technology (AUST) in Galadimawa. This initiative aimed to commemorate the United Nations International Day against Drug Abuse and Illegal Drug Trafficking for 2026.
Unified Voices Promote a Drug-Free Society
The event gathered representatives from various sectors, including the United Nations, NDLEA, and multiple youth organizations. Participants united under the common goal of promoting awareness about the dangers of drug abuse, advocating for a drug-free society.
Timely Intervention Focused on Youth Empowerment
Speaking on the sidelines, Anyanwu described the campaign as a crucial intervention to secure the future of young Nigerians. He emphasized that combating drug abuse is a collective responsibility and that youth should not just be considered beneficiaries of development but also as active agents of change.
Prevention and Education as Key Strategies
Anyanwu highlighted the alarming rise in drug and substance abuse among young people, which threatens education, public health, security, and national development. He stressed that prevention remains the most effective strategy, noting that peer pressure, misinformation, and unhealthy coping mechanisms often put young individuals at risk.
Flagship Initiatives Focused on Awareness and Support
He introduced SEYDI’s Drug Abuse Awareness Campus Tour (DAACT) as a key initiative aimed at educating students, promoting prevention, and encouraging healthy lifestyles. Through this program, SEYDI aims to develop a generation of Substance Abuse Awareness Ambassadors who will facilitate dialogue and action on campuses and in their communities.
Participants Rally for Community Engagement
During the event, participants marched along designated routes, carrying placards with messages advocating for a drug-free society. Anyanwu noted that this walk is more than a symbolic gesture; it represents a collective movement to strengthen communities through ongoing youth engagement and advocacy.
Strengthening Partnerships to Combat Drug Abuse
Emphasizing the importance of multi-sectoral collaboration, Anyanwu reaffirmed SEYDI’s commitment to partnering with educational institutions, government agencies, and health professionals to enhance anti-drug campaigns in Nigeria. He stated that the support from entities such as the United Nations and MTN Foundation illustrates the necessity of a unified approach to creating safer communities.
Youth Leadership and Community Commitment
Also addressing the audience, Mr. Nkechi Onia, Learning and Development Manager at MTN Nigeria, stressed the initiative’s focus on raising awareness among youth aged 10 to 25. Beyond awareness, SEYDI offers leadership development, mentorship, and referral services for individuals in need of rehabilitation.
At the conclusion of the event, participants renewed their commitment to fostering an anti-drug culture and collaborating to combat drug abuse. Anyanwu encapsulated the collective sentiment, asserting that the fight against drug abuse necessitates consolidated efforts from families, schools, communities, government agencies, and the youth themselves. He concluded with a powerful message: every action counts towards building a healthier, safer, and more productive society.
