King Sanusi Calls for Inclusive Education in Nigeria
During a recent convocation ceremony at Miva Open University in Lagos, King Khalifa Muhammad Sanusi II of Sarkin Kano emphasized the importance of accessible education for national growth. He argued that education should be universally recognized as a right, not a privilege reserved for those in affluent circumstances.
Celebrating the First Graduating Class
The event celebrated the inaugural graduating class, with degrees conferred to 1,212 students, including 970 graduate and 242 undergraduate students. Sanusi underscored that education should focus on personal development and lifelong learning, stating, “Education is not a meal ticket. It’s about improving yourself.”
Education as a Tool for Empowerment
Sanusi shared his own educational journey, which began with a degree in economics from Ahmadu Bello University in 1978 and later included studies in Sharia and Islamic studies in Sudan. He voiced his commitment to joining Miva Open University, seeing it as a pioneering step for education in Africa, free from geographical, financial, or social limitations.
Online Learning and Its Impact
In his address, Sanusi highlighted how online education is a game changer, offering opportunities to countless Nigerians, especially young women and men who face family and cultural obstacles. He passionately remarked that educating girls can significantly reduce challenges such as maternal mortality and poverty, asserting that education serves as a powerful means of empowerment.
Quality Beyond Geography
Addressing concerns about online education quality, Sanusi contended that academic rigor should not depend on physical infrastructure. He praised Miva for innovating its learning management system and utilizing artificial intelligence to uphold academic integrity and support students in real-time.
Preparing Graduates for a Competitive Workforce
The educational landscape, according to the Minister of Education, Dr. Tunji Alausa, is evolving towards open and digital learning. He recognized Miva Open University for its role in democratizing quality education and preparing students for the challenges of a fast-paced global economy. Alausa expressed admiration for the pioneers of the Class of 2026, many of whom balanced their academic pursuits with professional responsibilities.
Embracing Future Technologies
In his address, Mr. Babajide Sanwo-Olu, the Governor of Lagos State, recognized the significance of the graduates’ achievements as a testament to the successful delivery of quality education through technology. Meanwhile, the university president, Simu Shagaya, called on Nigerians to actively participate in the development of AI and emphasized Miva’s commitment to innovative educational programs, including one of Nigeria’s first bachelor’s degrees in AI.
Addressing Inequality in Education
In his remarks, Dr. Tunji Olowolafe, the newly inaugurated champion of Miva Open University, highlighted the systemic disparities in access to higher education in Nigeria. He firmly stated that educational equality should not be dictated by geography or income level. He praised Miva for its commitment to providing high-quality education that meets students’ needs without compromising standards.
Inspiring Future Leaders
Professor Tayo Arrogun, the Vice-Chancellor, urged graduates to become trailblazers who not only pursue opportunities but also create them. He encouraged them to embrace their degrees as foundational tools for success while committing to uplift others in their communities. “Be professionals who raise standards in your industry and leaders who give back,” he advised.
