President Bola Tinubu announced the end of long-standing neglect for the outskirts of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) on Monday, unveiling the New Hope Agenda (RHA) aimed at addressing infrastructural deficits. This initiative signifies a shift towards prioritizing the needs of residents in satellite towns like Karu, Orozo, and Jikwoyi, who have been deprived of essential services.
During the inauguration of a major water supply network linking Kalu, Orozo, Jikwoyi, Kurdu, and other surrounding communities, President Tinubu emphasized that the New Hope Agenda is a sacred promise to the Nigerian populace. He asserted that the government is dedicated to being responsive, proactive, and ultimately effective in its governance approach.
Expressing gratitude, Tinubu noted that the newly established water network fulfills a crucial commitment to provide basic amenities. “We are not here merely to inaugurate a project but to uplift the fundamental human rights that have been long denied to our vibrant community. Today marks the end of neglect for our satellite cities,” he stated.
The president highlighted that just over a year ago, during the launch of the Abuja Great Water Supply Project, he insisted on extending urban amenities beyond affluent areas to include satellite cities, which are home to a significant portion of Abuja’s working-class population. He remarked that when FCT Minister Nyesom Wike presented the water supply project proposal, his administration acted without delay.
Tinubu affirmed that access to clean water is fundamental to health and human dignity, linking it directly to broader economic progress. He praised CGC Nigeria Limited for their timely execution of the project, which comprises over 194 kilometers of pipelines delivering treated water to residents.
In a commendation of effective leadership, the President contrasted the tangible advancements witnessed in the region with previous administrations’ unfulfilled promises. “What we are witnessing across various sectors, including transportation, healthcare, and now water infrastructure, exemplifies the impact of aligned vision and execution,” he noted.
While urging the residents of Kalu, Jikwoyi, and surrounding areas to take responsibility for the infrastructure, Tinubu emphasized the importance of safeguarding these facilities from vandalism. He reiterated the government’s firm commitment to urban renewal and rural integration, announcing that similar interventions will extend to Bwari and other regional councils.
Earlier, FCT Minister Wike expressed deep appreciation for the President’s support in facilitating people-centric projects throughout the capital, including in satellite cities. He reaffirmed the commitment of the Tinubu administration to enhance the lives and livelihoods of residents through infrastructure development.
The FCT Minister of State, Dr. Mariya Bunkule, similarly commended both the President and Vice President for their dedication in transforming infrastructural services in and around the FCT. Meanwhile, FCDA Director-General Richard Unana Dauda provided an overview of the project, highlighting its design to meet the needs of residents in Kalu and surrounding areas, utilizing existing water storage and establishing over 1,000 distribution lines.
