Moses Itauma Aims for Heavyweight Championship Before Turning 22
Moses Itauma is determined to contend for the world heavyweight title before he celebrates his 22nd birthday on December 28 of this year. The young British talent, currently ranked highly by both the WBO and WBC, is poised to challenge for one of these coveted championship belts.
Path to the Title: Hrgović Showdown on August 29
Before making a title bid, Itauma must first face Filip Hrgović at London’s O2 Arena on August 29. Hrgović, known for his formidable skills, presents a significant challenge. Following this bout, if Oleksandr Usyk successfully defends his title against mandatory challenger Ajit Kabael, Itauma may find himself facing Usyk as a potential next opponent. However, should Usyk opt for a rematch with Rico Verhoeven, Itauma could seize the opportunity sooner.
Itauma’s Strategy and Expectations
Itauma has expressed readiness for the challenge, stating, “Even if Usyk doesn’t fight Kabael and vacates the title, I wouldn’t mind fighting Kabael if he can get past Hrgović.” He recognizes the possibility that if plans change, he may have to wait until next year to chase his championship dream.
Potential All-British Bout on the Horizon
The WBO title is currently held by Daniel Dubois, and Itauma envisions an all-British heavyweight clash with Dubois in 2027. He confidently suggested, “I think it could happen next year. Isn’t that good?” His upcoming fight against Hrgović is expected to significantly elevate his experience in world-class competition.
Handling Pressure and Anticipating Tough Fights
On the subject of pressure, Itauma shared his philosophy: “I’m not dealing with pressure; I’m letting pressure deal with me.” He is aware that the expectations surrounding him are high, stating, “Pressure makes diamonds, and it’s true.” He has immense respect for Hrgović’s prowess, acknowledging the Croatian’s complete fighting style and warning that he has no apparent weaknesses.
Hrgović’s Confidence Ahead of the Clash
Hrgović, however, is less optimistic about Itauma’s abilities. He remarked, “I predict he will win by knockout. Hrgović in the seventh.” The Croatian noted that while Itauma may show promise, only time will reveal his true courage and resilience in the ring.
Frank Warren Advocates Itauma’s Title Aspirations
Promoter Frank Warren remains adamant that a victory over Hrgović could set Itauma on a direct path to his first world title shot. “He’s up against an Olympic medalist with a wealth of experience. Hrgović is tough, having never been knocked out,” Warren emphasized. He also confirmed that Itauma’s ranking as No. 1 positions him favorably for immediate title challenges, expressing hope for a championship bout within the year.
