Peter Obi Criticizes Detention of Activist as Threat to Democracy
Peter Obi, the presidential candidate for the Democratic Congress of Nigeria, has sharply denounced the detention of activist Omoyele Sowore at Kuje Correctional Center. He characterizes the incident as a significant setback for democracy and raises alarms about the increasing use of state mechanisms to stifle dissent in Nigeria.
Court Ruling Leads to Sowore’s Detention
Obi’s comments came in response to a recent ruling by the Federal High Court in Abuja. Justice Mohammed Umar ordered Sowore to be incarcerated while awaiting a decision on his application for a stay of execution concerning a previous bail revocation order. The court further declined a motion to dismiss the case over accusations of bias against the judge.
Implications for Civil Liberties
In a statement released on Tuesday, Obi expressed deep concern about this development, suggesting it reflects a troubling trend that could undermine civil liberties in Nigeria. He stated, “This reflects a dangerous shift towards an environment where dissent is not tolerated.”
Democracy and Civil Rights
Obi emphasized the necessity of a democracy anchored on the protection of fundamental rights rather than the suppression of critical voices. He articulated, “Democracy thrives not on silencing dissent but on robust protection of fundamental human rights as enshrined in the Constitution, particularly freedom of expression and peaceful assembly.”
Risks of Eroding Public Trust
Highlighting the current socio-economic climate, Obi warned that increasing pressure on civic space could exacerbate public distrust in state institutions, particularly during periods of economic hardship and heightened security challenges. “Even the courts should exercise caution to avoid inflaming already tense situations,” he noted.
The Narrative of the ‘Threat’
He further cautioned against the perception of government critics as threats to national stability. “When we begin to regard citizen critics, activists, and journalists as adversaries rather than collaborators in fostering accountability, we risk sliding towards authoritarianism,” Obi remarked.
Call for Upholding Democratic Principles
Obi urged authorities to ensure that constitutional protections are honored and due process is adhered to, asserting that Nigeria’s democratic institutions must remain intact and resilient against the tide of enforcement that seeks to undermine them. “A new Nigeria cannot be built if we continue to erode the democratic frameworks that safeguard our collective rights,” he concluded.
Reactions from Civil Society
The Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project has also condemned Sowore’s detention, arguing that he is being penalized for lawfully exercising his rights amid ongoing concerns regarding judicial independence and the shrinking civic space in Nigeria.
