The Akwa Ibom State Government has announced the launch of a major Hospital City project, aimed at revolutionizing healthcare delivery and promoting medical tourism both within Nigeria and internationally.
Governor Eno Highlights the Vision for Regional Health Services
At the unveiling ceremony, Governor Umo Eno described the initiative as one of the most significant investments made by his administration. He emphasized that this vision extends beyond Akwa Ibom, catering to Nigerians and Africans seeking high-quality healthcare services.
Project Details and Objectives
The Hospital City will span approximately 100 hectares and will feature distinct sections dedicated to various medical specialties and health services. Governor Eno expressed his commitment to significantly reducing medical tourism by providing advanced, patient-centered medical care that aligns with global standards.
Long-Term Sustainability and Economic Growth
The governor reiterated that the project is more than just a construction effort; it represents an investment in the future health and prosperity of the local population. He expects the hospital to be financially self-sustaining in the long run while generating job opportunities and boosting the regional economy.
State’s Health Workforce Enhancement Initiatives
In a bid to enhance health service delivery, Governor Eno revealed that since March 2025, the state has employed 2,844 health workers. He called on residents to leverage the state’s health insurance program, stressing the importance of universal health coverage for achieving sustainable health outcomes.

During the ceremony, the Minister of Health and Social Welfare, Muhammad Ali Pate, commended the governor and the people of Akwa Ibom for their dedication to healthcare transformation. He highlighted how the medical city epitomizes the healthcare reforms championed by President Tinubu. Pate assured the state government of federal support for the successful execution and operation of the project.
Future Training and Technology Integration
Health Secretary Emmanuel Ekem John and Project Manager Tainye Isokariari presented an overview of the medical facility, describing it as an extensive journey towards medical excellence. Isokariari noted that the complex will include a 10-story building encompassing 62 medical specialties, equipped with cutting-edge technology. He added that prior to the facility’s completion, 100 Akwa Ibom indigenes will receive specialized training abroad to manage the advanced equipment.
Community Benefits and Broadening Healthcare Access
The Secretary-General of the Nigerian Cancer Society expressed enthusiasm for the Hospital City, labeling it a groundbreaking initiative that will significantly enhance cancer treatment and healthcare throughout Nigeria. He assured that once operational, the facility would bring immense benefits to cancer patients nationwide.
