Federal High Court Postpones El-Rufai Bail Decision Until 2026
The Federal High Court in Kaduna has delayed its ruling on the bail application submitted by former Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai and his co-defendant Jimi Lawal to July 1, 2026. This development follows corruption charges filed against them by the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offenses Commission (ICPC).
Charges Against El-Rufai Include Financial Fraud
On Wednesday, El-Rufai appeared before two separate courts in Kaduna, where he faces allegations of abuse of power, financial fraud, and money laundering. These serious charges stem from accusations made during his tenure as governor.
Multiple Defendants Face Amended Charges
Justice Hauwaw Buhari presided over the Federal High Court session, where El-Rufai and Mr. Lawal, a former special assistant in El-Rufai’s administration, were arraigned along with several legal entities on 11 amended charges. El-Rufai entered a not guilty plea to the first count, while Lawal similarly pleaded not guilty to counts six, seven, and eight.
Corporate Entity Also Arraigned
Singularity Network Security Limited, a corporation, was charged with counts two through five and counts nine through eleven, making it a significant player in this ongoing legal battle. The trial involves El-Rufai, Lawal, and five additional legal entities, all currently under scrutiny as defendants in this matter.
Arguments Heard on Bail Application
During Wednesday’s proceedings, both El-Rufai and Lawal’s attorney notified the court of the pending bail application. After considering arguments from both the prosecution and the defense, Justice Buhari adjourned the case until July 1, 2026, to deliver a decision on the bail request.
Additional Legal Proceedings for El-Rufai
Earlier in the day, El-Rufai arrived at the courthouse at 9:30 AM under tight security, as the hearing of another suit filed by the ICPC was also set to progress. This particular case involves Judge Darius Cobo and allegations of abuse of power and money laundering between 2015 and 2023 during El-Rufai’s administration. The court has scheduled further hearings for June 29, 2026.
Denials and Claims of Misappropriation
El-Rufai has consistently denied all accusations, asserting that his actions during his time in office were both legal and in service of the public interest. In contrast, the ICPC claims its investigation uncovered significant irregularities in the management of public funds and contract awards, leading to concerns over the misappropriation of resources.
Bail Conditions and Growing National Interest
Previously, on April 14, 2026, Judge Rilwan Aikawa granted El-Rufai bail set at N200 million with specific conditions, including two sureties—one must be a Level 15 civil servant, active or retired, while the other should be a recognized traditional ruler. El-Rufai later sought to modify these bail conditions, but the court denied his request. The ICPC has indicted him alongside two former Kaduna State officials on multiple charges, all of which the defendants have contested. The trial has attracted considerable national attention due to El-Rufai’s influential role in Nigerian politics and his noteworthy eight-year tenure as governor of Kaduna State.
