Study Finds Project Complexity Impedes Success in Sub-Saharan Africa
A global study conducted by the Project Management Institute (PMI) highlights project complexity as a significant barrier to success across sub-Saharan Africa. This comes as the region is in the midst of rapid digital transformation, infrastructure development, energy expansion, and modernization of the public sector.
Insights into Project Challenges
PMI’s latest report, “Pulse of the Profession: Driving Success in Complex Projects,” reveals growing concerns among project managers and senior leaders. With increasing urgency to deliver results, organizations often encounter missed deadlines, decision-making bottlenecks, and heightened stress on teams during this period of swift change.
Global Trends Reflect Local Realities
The findings, which draw on insights from project professionals across 35 countries, indicate that 81% of project professionals worldwide perceive a rise in project complexity. Notably, 37% of respondents attribute a significant increase to this complexity, driven by factors such as artificial intelligence integration, evolving stakeholder expectations, economic volatility, and heightened system interconnectedness.
Delivery Delays Impacting Sub-Saharan Africa
The report underscores a troubling trend of project delivery disruptions in sub-Saharan Africa. Specifically, 44% of projects in the region experience delays, significantly outpacing the global average of 35%. Additionally, delayed stakeholder decision-making affects 41% of regional projects, compared to 34% globally, marking a key friction point for local organizations.
Complexity Compounds Project Challenges
Research findings suggest that growing complexity inhibits essential coordination, approvals, and execution, leading to governance bottlenecks and increased delivery difficulties. Morale among teams is also at risk, with 23% of regional respondents reporting low morale due to poorly managed complexity, compared to 19% globally.

George Assamani, Managing Director for PMI in Sub-Saharan Africa, emphasizes that these issues reflect the current challenges many organizations are facing. With ambitious agendas encompassing infrastructure, industrialization, digital inclusion, energy accessibility, fintech innovation, and public sector reform, increased complexity in implementation accompanies the region’s high aspirations.
Adapting to a Complex Landscape
As organizations strive to accelerate project delivery, Assamani notes the limitations of traditional approaches that focus merely on timelines and tasks. Instead, success increasingly hinges on the capability to navigate interconnected systems, achieve swift stakeholder alignment, and foster adaptable teams that can thrive amidst ongoing uncertainties.
Opportunities Amid Challenges
Despite the hurdles posed by complexity, research indicates promising opportunities for organizations that adeptly manage these challenges. Teams that can effectively navigate complex environments are five times more likely to achieve project success. Globally, projects with effective complexity management demonstrate an impressive 88% success rate, contrasting sharply with the mere 14% success rate seen in projects lacking in this regard.
