Nigerian Ports Authority Leadership Praises Federal Character Commission Reforms
Dr. Abubakar Dansoho, Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of the Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA), expressed his appreciation for the Federal Character Commission (FCC) leadership during a meeting on Friday. He attributed the ongoing reforms and renewed institutional energy within the FCC to the vision of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
These comments followed a productive dialogue between NPA management and the FCC’s Works, Transport and Aviation Committee at the commission’s headquarters in Abuja. Dansoho characterized the meeting as a significant step towards enhancing the NPA’s adherence to federal principles of privilege.
During his address, Dansoho acknowledged the warm reception and the quality of discussions, highlighting a newfound era of transparency and accountability within the FCC. He noted, “The convivial atmosphere and depth of engagement truly reflect positive transformations in the Commission.” His remarks emphasize the importance of these reforms in achieving effective governance.
Furthermore, Dansoho underscored the necessity of collaboration among government agencies to address national development effectively. He advocated for strict compliance with laws, regulations, and government policies, stating that this would not only bolster public institutions but also enhance service delivery across sectors.
“Recognizing the need for collaboration and adherence to established guidelines is crucial for meaningful progress,” he remarked. Dansoho believes that the partnership between the NPA and FCC will bolster organizational governance and significantly contribute to national advancement.
The NPA chief also detailed the authority’s strategic importance, noting its long-standing history of over 70 years in Nigeria. He mentioned that, although the Nigerian Navy was once part of the NPA, the Nigerian Maritime Authority Safety Agency emerged from a division within the organization, eventually becoming an independent entity.
With responsibilities that include managing significant ports such as Port Harcourt, Warri, and Lekki, the NPA ensures safe and efficient vessel operations while maintaining essential port infrastructure. Dansoho highlighted the competitive environment for cargo transport, which includes neighboring ports in Cotonou, Lomé, Ghana, and Abidjan, and stressed the need for improved competitiveness to boost government revenue.
FCC Emphasizes Compliance and Collaboration with NPA
Hon. Peter Eze, Chairman of the FCC’s Committee on Work, Transportation, and Aviation, commended the NPA for its proactive engagement and commitment to compliance with the FCC’s mandate. Eze, who represents Enugu State on the commission, revealed that the NPA has been fully briefed on the FCC’s new compliance framework and the revised operational guidelines aimed at promoting equity within public services.
The initiative seeks to evaluate the NPA’s compliance levels while fostering cooperation to ensure that the principles of equity, fairness, and inclusion are upheld across public agencies. Eze stated, “This effort is designed to monitor performance effectively and eliminate any chances for future violations of the Federal Character Principles.”
In line with this initiative, the commission has introduced stricter monitoring mechanisms and enhanced penalties for non-compliance among Ministries and Agencies (MDAs). Eze added that under the leadership of Executive Chairman Hurayat Motunrayo Omidiran, NPA officials have been thoroughly informed about the FCC’s new rules and potential repercussions for violations.
Expressing confidence in the NPA’s management, Eze praised Dansoho’s leadership and the significant progress the agency has made under his tenure. He is optimistic that the NPA will fully align with the FCC’s mandate, believing that close cooperation will facilitate good governance and promote national unity.
“I am convinced that together we can enhance governance in Nigeria and work towards building a better future for our country,” Eze remarked.
