Recognition for NDLEA Leadership and Personnel
President Bola Tinubu lauded the leadership and personnel of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) for their courage and professionalism in combating drug-related issues in Nigeria. Under the direction of Brigadier General (RTD) Mohammed Marwa, the NDLEA has been instrumental in both drug supply and demand reduction, achieving significant successes that have garnered respect for Nigeria within Africa and internationally.
Commitment to Address Drug Abuse and Trafficking
In a statement issued on Friday, President Tinubu reaffirmed the Federal Government’s steadfast commitment to eradicating drug abuse and trafficking. He pointed out that the effects of drugs extend beyond individual users, severely impacting families, educational institutions, workplaces, and national security. To tackle these challenges, the government is employing a coordinated and multifaceted strategy.
Multi-pronged Approach to Combat Drug Crisis
The President emphasized the necessity of creating an environment conducive to success for young Nigerians. Through his Renewal Hope Agenda, the administration is expanding educational access, promoting skills development, supporting entrepreneurship, and implementing social interventions aimed at addressing the root causes that lead individuals to substance abuse and criminality. He highlighted the need for decisive action to cut off the supply of illicit drugs, advocating for stronger border controls and enhanced collaboration among law enforcement agencies.
Science and Technology in the Fight Against Drugs
At the grand finale of a ceremony commemorating the 2026 International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking in Abuja, Tinubu spoke on this year’s theme, “The Global Drug Problem: Persistent Problems, Emerging Challenges and Innovative Responses.” He noted that the evolving drug landscape necessitates constant vigilance and adaptability. The President underlined that science, technology, and reliable data must be pivotal in identifying emerging trends and evaluating interventions.
Aggressive Campaigns Yield Impressive Results
Brigadier General Marwa remarked on the NDLEA’s impressive achievements, citing significant operational successes in dismantling drug cartels and conducting record seizures at ports, airports, and borders. In the past 18 months, authorities have made over 29,000 arrests, seizing more than 5.3 million kilograms of illegal drugs valued at approximately N1.5 trillion, thereby restoring hope to many young people.
Expanding Drug Demand Reduction Efforts
While acknowledging that arrests alone cannot address the drug crisis, Marwa outlined the NDLEA’s initiatives targeting drug demand reduction. The agency’s War on Drug Abuse (WADA) campaign has successfully executed over 6,600 sensitization programs, reaching nearly five million individuals. The NDLEA is also improving its technological capabilities and forensic analysis to combat new and emerging drug challenges.
Innovative Strategies for Sustainable Solutions
Marwa introduced the Alternative Development Programme, a pioneering initiative in Africa aimed at providing legitimate income sources for illegal cannabis growers. This program aligns with President Tinubu’s vision for sustainable livelihoods and economic empowerment. He expressed gratitude for the ongoing support from civil society and international partners, emphasizing that collective action is essential in the fight against drug abuse.
Collaborative Efforts and Future Endeavors
Professor Oluwatoyin Odek from the University of Ibadan stressed the importance of celebrating milestones in the ongoing battle against drug abuse, highlighting the significant progress made since the revitalization of the NDLEA in 2021. The United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) also commended Nigeria’s balanced approach to drug management, emphasizing the necessity for evidence-based solutions that respect human rights. The UNODC stands ready to support Nigeria in these efforts through technical expertise and innovative partnerships.
