Governor Calls for Action Against Political Violence in Osun State
Osun State Governor Ademola Adeleke has condemned the ongoing violence in the region and demanded immediate action against political thugs implicated in violent crimes. He emphasized that these attacks must cease and called for the arrest and prosecution of those responsible.
Governor Questions Police Leadership
Adeleke reiterated his request for the reassignment of Osun State Police Commissioner Ibrahim Gotan, claiming he has shown bias in his approach to handling political violence. The governor voiced these concerns during a meeting with the Deputy Inspector General of Police for the Information and Communications Division, Adegoke Fayoade, at his office in Osogbo.
Urgent Need for Accountability
During the meeting, the governor highlighted the urgent need to identify and prosecute those accountable for the spate of violence in the state. He remarked, “Your presence here coincides with a troubling trend where inaction by certain officials is escalating political violence.” Adeleke’s statement reflects a growing tension in Osun, exacerbated by ineffective policing.
Escalation of Violence
Highlighting specific incidents, Adeleke noted three unaddressed political murders in recent weeks: Ele Yera in Ikile, Ezekiel in Irobu, and Aderogba in Esa Oke. He expressed concern over the lack of arrests in these cases and criticized the police’s apparent unwillingness to act against known suspects involved in violence.
Police Inaction Raises Concerns
Adeleke pointed out that while police are quick to arrest members of the Accord party for minor offenses, they have not detained any suspects for serious crimes, including the recent murders and gun attacks. “Political thuggery has become rampant, with brazen displays of violence occurring in broad daylight,” he said, lamenting the lack of proactive measures from law enforcement.
Inspector General of Police Addresses Concerns
In response, DIG Fayoade confirmed that the Inspector General of Police, Olatunji Disu, has mandated a zero-tolerance policy towards violence and banditry in Osun State. He assured that a thorough investigation will be conducted into any acts of violence, promising that those found guilty will face arrest and prosecution.
Commitment to Peaceful Elections
The Deputy Inspector General further underscored the commitment to ensuring a peaceful electoral process in Osun State, referencing successful recent elections in Anambra and Ekiti. “We will uphold the rule of law and work diligently to prevent any disruption during the elections,” he stated, reinforcing the police’s dedication to maintaining governance and security in the region.
