Oduyemi Denounces Violence in Osun State Ahead of Elections
Nathaniel Oduyemi, the senatorial candidate for the Osun Central Senatorial District representing the Democratic Congress of Nigeria, has expressed grave concern over the rising violence and unrest in parts of Osun State as elections approach. He described the current situation as alarming and wholly unacceptable.
Disturbing Events Go Viral
In a statement released on Saturday, Oduyemi articulated his distress regarding videos circulating on social media. These clips depict alleged political thugs attacking citizens, destroying property, and forcing residents to flee their homes for safety.
The Image of Osun State
Oduyemi shared his heartbreak over the disturbing scenes he has witnessed, stating, “I am watching with deep pain and concern the horrific events unfolding.” He emphasized that this violence tarnishes the image and values of Nigeria, asserting, “This is not the Osun we know and certainly not the image our nation should project.”
Rejecting Political Violence
The senatorial aspirant condemned all forms of political violence, intimidation, and unlawful acts attributed to any political party. He firmly asserted that no political ambition justifies the loss of life. “Democracy should be a contest of ideas and visions, not a battlefield,” he stated.
Call for Immediate Action
Oduyemi urged the Nigeria Police Force and other security agencies to take swift and impartial action to prevent the situation from deteriorating further. He emphasized the need for accountability, urging that those responsible for sponsoring and executing violent acts be identified and brought to justice.
Appeal to National Leadership
He also called upon President Bola Tinubu to intervene and restore calm in Osun State. “As the leader of the country, I urge the President to take all necessary measures to protect lives and property, reassuring the citizens that democracy will not be compromised by violence,” he emphasized.
Empowering the Youth
Oduyemi reiterated his commitment to peaceful, issue-based politics, rejecting the notion of utilizing violence in pursuit of political office. He voiced concerns about the youth being manipulated as political thugs, insisting that they should instead be empowered as leaders and innovators. “Our young people possess immense talent and creativity that can contribute significantly to our nation’s development,” he stated.
Resistance to Political Thuggery
The candidate also urged young people to resist invitations to violence, highlighting the long-term negative consequences it can impose. “Elections will come and go, but the effects of violence can last for generations,” he warned, appealing to parents, guardians, and community leaders to discourage their involvement in politically motivated violence.
A Vision for the Future
If elected, Oduyemi pledged to advocate for policies that empower the youth through quality education, skill acquisition, enterprise development, and job creation. He concluded by calling for unity among stakeholders to uphold democracy in the state, expressing hope that “wisdom may prevail over anger, and peace over conflict.” His vision is a future where all residents of Osun State can live free from fear and violence.
