Government Initiatives Target Elderly Welfare and Health Services
The Renewed Hope for the Elderly (RHE) has announced that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration is undertaking significant reforms at the National Center for the Elderly (NSCC). These changes aim to establish a comprehensive welfare package that will benefit millions of aging Nigerians.
The proposed initiatives focus on enhancing pension management, specialized medical care, improved retirement benefits, and increased access to age-friendly health services. RHE emphasized that this restructuring represents one of the most ambitious efforts to restore dignity to older citizens by transforming the NSCC into a robust institution capable of delivering sustainable welfare programs nationwide.
Long-Term Social Protection Framework for Seniors
At a recent press conference in Abuja, RHE Director-General Dr. Bode Olaonipekun outlined the Tinubu administration’s commitment to laying a solid foundation for long-term social protection of older Nigerians. He noted that the federal government is actively engaged in strengthening national senior centers and implementing policies focused on the welfare of the elderly.
Olaonipekun expressed appreciation for the administration’s heightened focus on aging citizens, stating that bolstering the National Center on Aging reflects a renewed commitment to protecting the dignity and well-being of older adults. The RHE director highlighted the importance of expanding access to pension management, aged care, and preventive health services.
Framework Supporting Future Generations of Retirees
Beyond immediate interventions, Olaonipekun emphasized that the administration is working towards a sustainable framework aimed at institutionalizing welfare packages for older Nigerians. This ensures that future retirees receive enhanced protection and improved quality of life. He asserted that President Tinubu’s administration intends to solidify benefits for the elderly well into the future.
Olaonipekun called for peaceful advocacy to encourage active participation from older Nigerians in the democratic process. He asserted that the elderly represent the nation’s reservoir of wisdom and experience, arguing that supporting their welfare should be viewed as a constitutional obligation rather than mere charity.
Addressing Neglect and Economic Hardship among Seniors
Many retirees, including former teachers, civil servants, farmers, military veterans, and community leaders, have faced prolonged neglect, insufficient social protection, inadequate health services, and economic difficulties post-retirement, according to Olaonipekun. He warned that neglecting the elderly could ultimately curtail national development.
Investing in health and well-being for the aging population, he said, is pivotal, not just for preserving institutional memory but also for reducing future healthcare costs. He commended programs initiated by First Lady Senator Oluremi Tinubu that promote horticulture, subsistence farming, and environmentally friendly initiatives, noting their alignment with broader welfare strategies of the federal government.
Mobilization for Upcoming Elections
The RHE director reiterated the importance of continuity in the current administration, asserting that ongoing reforms can evolve into lasting national policies that improve the living conditions of the elderly. On the political front, he shared plans for a nationwide mobilization effort targeting older Nigerians, including pensioners, retirees, traditional leaders, and faith-based organizations, in anticipation of the 2027 general elections.
Olaonipekun stated that this campaign aims to secure approximately 24 million votes for President Tinubu’s re-election, emphasizing the need to inform seniors about the prospects for their welfare should the current government remain in power. He urged citizens to assess the administration’s performance in aged care as they prepare for the election, underscoring the moral imperative to care for the most vulnerable members of society.
As he concluded, Olaonipekun expressed a desire for future generations to reflect on his generation’s legacy, advocating for compassion over neglect, inclusion over isolation, and dignity over abandonment for the nation’s elderly citizens.
