Gombe State Specialist Hospital Refutes Kidney Removal Allegations
The management of Gombe State Specialist Hospital has firmly denied social media allegations claiming that doctors unlawfully removed the kidney of patient Barila Alhassan during a Caesarean section in May 2026.
In a statement released on Sunday, hospital officials labeled the accusations made by the patient’s brother, Zakaria Alhassan, as “false, malicious, reckless, and unsupported by medical evidence.”
“These claims are entirely misleading and lack any grounding in medical fact, clinical evidence, or hospital documentation,” the management stated. They emphasized that Alhassan only underwent an emergency Caesarean section and clarified that the surgical team did not perform any kidney-related procedures.
In response to the family’s concerns, the hospital stated that it commissioned a CT-intravenous urography (CT-IVU) at the Federal Teaching Hospital to verify the patient’s health status. The hospital explained that the CT-IVU results indicated a congenital absence of one kidney, possibly accompanied by anomalies in the contralateral ureter, supporting the notion of a developmental issue rather than surgical removal.
The management funded this investigation “in a spirit of transparency” to help clarify the situation. They also highlighted that they had met twice with the Alhassan family to discuss the findings and review all relevant clinical records.
Additionally, the hospital noted that it had arranged for a re-examination at an independent medical facility at the family’s request. “All parties have consented to this request, and we are currently awaiting the new findings that were mutually agreed upon during our previous meetings,” the statement added.
The hospital criticized what it termed a social media campaign designed to tarnish its reputation and erode public trust in healthcare professionals. “The ongoing accusations are unfounded, reckless, and defamatory, intended solely to mislead the public and damage our reputation,” they stated. The management reiterated their confidence in their medical staff, asserting that no kidney removals occurred during surgeries at their facility.
Finally, the hospital cautioned that while it will cooperate with lawful inquiries from relevant authorities, it plans to take legal and administrative action against individuals and organizations that disseminate defamatory information. They urged the public to dismiss the allegations and rely solely on credible facts and official statements.
