Open Startup Launches Science Road to Empower African Innovation
Open Startup, a prominent pan-African organization dedicated to fostering entrepreneurship and innovation across the continent, has unveiled Science Road, a strategic initiative aimed at bolstering Africa’s research and deep technology sectors. This initiative seeks to transform scientific research into globally competitive ventures and industries.
As Open Startup celebrates its 10th anniversary, having originated in Tunisia in 2016, the organization is transitioning into a new phase. Its focus now centers on ventures that create solutions in health, climate technology, artificial intelligence, and related fields. This evolution builds on a decade of successfully empowering over 3,000 founders and 1,000 startups across more than 20 African nations. Science Road serves to consolidate Open Startup’s programs under a cohesive acceleration platform, enhancing its role as a vital link between African entrepreneurs, researchers, investors, and markets. Additionally, the organization is launching Openers First, a new investment arm that will provide early-stage financing to select initiatives emerging from the platform.
This new direction reflects Open Startup’s growth from a university entrepreneurship competition to a comprehensive pan-African investment readiness platform. Over the past ten years, the organization has successfully connected founders with investors, businesses, universities, policymakers, and international partners, fostering a robust community that includes over 500 mentors, advisors, and experts. Open Startup has trained more than 300 coaches, secured funding, generated jobs, and helped ventures sustain their operations beyond initial support.

Science Road specifically targets an underserved segment of Africa’s innovation economy, which often lacks access to necessary expertise, robust connections with universities and industries, and the initial capital needed for commercialization. This platform seeks to alleviate these challenges.
Open Startup’s offerings are structured around two primary pathways: the first aims at pre-seed innovators who are looking to turn their cutting-edge research and ideas into viable businesses, while the second supports seed-stage startups that are scaling technologies designed to tackle pressing market or societal challenges.
Openers First is poised to provide crucial early-stage funding to promising ventures born from the Science Road initiative. This investment arm complements the organization’s ongoing efforts in investment readiness, aiding startups in bridging the funding gap between pre-seed and seed-stage development. Moreover, it contributes to the long-term viability of Open Startup’s mission.
The implementation of Science Road will also enhance collaborative efforts between ecosystems across Africa, with partnerships being strengthened from Tunis to South Africa. Open Startup is deepening its collaborations with entities such as CERI, Stellenbosch University, and LaunchLab, thereby equipping research-driven founders to transition scientific innovations from the lab to the market, facilitating real-world adoption.
With a vast network of partners both within Africa and globally, including KfW AfricaGrow, AfricInvest, the US Department of State, the European Union, Digital Africa, and several prestigious universities, Open Startup’s initiatives are well-supported. As the African innovation ecosystem matures, there is an increasing need for targeted support to enable research-driven ventures to achieve commercial viability and readiness for investment.
