EACO and Smart Africa Forge Strategic Partnership for Digital Transformation in Africa
The East African Communications Organization (EACO) has partnered with the Smart Africa Secretariat by signing a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) aimed at advancing digital transformation and establishing a unified digital market in Africa by 2030.
This collaboration unites two influential regional institutions, leveraging their complementary strengths to enhance digital development, regional integration, and inclusive socio-economic growth via information and communication technology (ICT). By merging EACO’s expertise in regional policy and regulation with Smart Africa’s expansive digital transformation initiatives, the partnership sets out to expedite the rollout of impactful digital programs across the continent.
The MoU outlines a comprehensive framework for cooperation in critical areas such as digital infrastructure development, spectrum management, data governance, internet governance, broadband expansion, cross-border connectivity, digital public infrastructure, and financing for digital infrastructure. Additionally, the partnership aims to initiate projects related to free roaming services, sustainable data centers, artificial intelligence infrastructure, and the capacity building of ICT stakeholders throughout Africa.
During the signing ceremony, EACO Executive Director Caroline Koech remarked on the significance of this milestone in the continent’s digital evolution. “This collaboration marks a pivotal step in our collective goal to create a more connected, inclusive, and resilient digital landscape for Africa,” she stated. She emphasized that the partnership would enhance policy harmonization, boost investments in digital infrastructure, and promote a seamless digital economy across the continent.
Lasina Kone, Executive Director and CEO of the Smart Africa Secretariat, reiterated the critical role of regional cooperation in achieving Africa’s digital objectives. He highlighted that organizations like EACO are vital in translating the continent’s ambitions into actionable plans at both national and regional levels. “Together, we can expedite digital transformation and deliver concrete benefits to people, businesses, and governments throughout Africa,” he noted.
This collaboration is anticipated to foster the development of standardized digital policies, promote cross-border digital services, and bolster institutional capacity while mobilizing investment in emerging technologies across Africa.
The agreement is set to last for an initial term of 36 months, reinforcing the shared commitment of both organizations to promote collaboration and support Africa’s digital transformation initiatives. The framework will facilitate ongoing cooperation through joint programs, knowledge exchange, and strategic partnerships.
