Pastor Adeboye Defends President Tinubu Amid Security Criticism
Enoch Adeboye, the General Overseer of the Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG), has voiced his support for President Bola Tinubu in light of criticism regarding Nigeria’s escalating security issues. Adeboye emphasized that the president has been fulfilling his constitutional obligations by directing the military to address the threat posed by terrorists.
Call for Increased Military Action
While defending Tinubu, Adeboye urged the president to intensify efforts against insurgency, giving military leaders a strict 90-day deadline to eliminate terrorism or resign from their positions. He also called on security agencies to dismantle the financial networks that support violent factions.
Understanding the Commander-in-Chief’s Role
During his remarks at the United States-Nigeria Faith Heroes Awards Gala organized by the Save Nigeria Group in Washington on June 23, Adeboye argued that those criticizing Tinubu for Nigeria’s security woes misunderstand the role of the commander-in-chief. He stated that a leader’s responsibilities include issuing directives to military personnel without needing to engage in combat directly.
Direct Comparisons to Global Leaders
To emphasize his perspective, Adeboye compared Tinubu’s leadership style to that of international figures like former U.S. President Donald Trump, noting that leaders typically issue military orders without participating in on-ground operations.
Acknowledgment of Rising Insecurity
Despite his support for the president, Adeboye did not shy away from acknowledging Nigeria’s deepening security crisis. He remarked that violent incidents, including terrorism and kidnappings, have increasingly spread from the northern regions into southern communities, prompting widespread concerns among citizens.
Direct Conversations with Leadership
Adeboye disclosed that he has engaged in discussions about the country’s security problems with President Tinubu and the First Lady, Oluremi Tinubu, who is also an RCCG pastor. In their conversation, he advised the president to deliver unambiguous orders to military commanders aimed at eradicating terrorism within a specified period.
Targeting Terrorist Financiers
The cleric also highlighted the need for the federal government to focus on the financiers of terrorism, identifying them as influential businessmen and politicians whose actions contribute to ongoing insecurity. Adeboye stressed the importance of going after these individuals to dismantle the infrastructure that enables terrorism, including the financial and logistical support that provides terrorists with resources.
Appeal for International Cooperation
In his remarks, Adeboye appealed for increased cooperation from the United States and other international partners in combating terrorism in Nigeria. He expressed confidence that collaborative global efforts could significantly contribute to restoring peace and security across the nation.
