eHealth Africa Launches Women Vendor Accelerator Program
eHealth Africa (eHA) has introduced a new initiative aimed at empowering women-owned businesses to compete for institutional contracts. This program has successfully trained 213 entrepreneurs from 11 Nigerian states, equipping them to meet crucial procurement standards and seize larger business opportunities.
Program Overview and Structure
The “Women Vendor Accelerator Program” is a collaborative effort between eHealth Africa and EHA Impact Ventures (EIV). Unlike traditional programs that primarily focus on grants and funding, this initiative prepares women entrepreneurs to navigate formal procurement systems utilized by businesses, development organizations, and large institutions.
Diverse Participation Across Nigerian States
The one-day hybrid training event attracted participants from a wide array of Nigerian states, including Kano, Abuja, Borno, Yobe, Kaduna, Katsina, Zamfara, Sokoto, Kebbi, Bauchi, and Niger. This diversity reflects the program’s commitment to inclusivity and widespread access to valuable resources.
Comprehensive Training on Procurement Standards
During the training, entrepreneurs received hands-on instruction on key topics such as vendor registration, procurement procedures, ethical business practices, and strategies for securing institutional contracts. Participants also had the opportunity to engage directly with procurement experts, gaining insights into organizational expectations and how to enhance their chances of becoming preferred suppliers.
Addressing Challenges Faced by Women Entrepreneurs
This initiative specifically targets the persistent challenges that many women-owned businesses encounter in Africa. While women play an important role in the entrepreneurial landscape, they often face barriers such as limited knowledge of procurement processes, inadequate professional networks, and compliance issues demanded by larger organizations.
Commitment to Empowerment and Growth
Ben Igbinosa, Director of Finance and Administration at eHealth Africa, emphasized the need for more than just policy statements in supporting women entrepreneurs. She stated that enabling women-owned businesses to compete effectively within procurement systems requires strategic investments. eHealth Africa is dedicated to enhancing opportunities for qualified women businesses, aiming to facilitate their participation in procurement processes and supply chains.
Future Support and Development Opportunities
According to Ramatu Abdullah, Senior Coordinator of Executive Project Support at EHA Impact Ventures, this program is part of a broader strategy to strengthen women-led businesses beyond financial access. The initiative promises participants further benefits, including mentorship, access to business networks, market opportunities, and tailored financial support, all designed to position them as competitive suppliers.
Long-term Vision for Sustainable Business Growth
This accelerator program is the first phase of a larger strategy, with commitments to ongoing support through vendor matching, compliance guidance, and funding opportunities facilitated by EHA Impact Ventures. By shifting the focus of development organizations from merely supporting entrepreneurship to fostering sustainable supply chains, this initiative could pave the way for female entrepreneurs to achieve stable business growth through newfound access to procurement opportunities.
Active in 26 African countries for over 15 years, eHealth Africa has dedicated itself to assisting governments and development partners with digital health and technology solutions aimed at bolstering health systems across the continent.
