Barcelona Pursues Julián Álvarez Amidst Multi-Club Interest
Barcelona president Joan Laporta has confirmed that the Spanish champions have formally submitted an offer for Atlético Madrid forward Julián Álvarez, whose future remains uncertain after expressing a desire to leave. He emphasized that the offer is still valid.
At 26 years old, Álvarez revealed to ESPN last week his intention to depart Atlético this summer. His potential relocation has attracted interest from several major clubs, including Real Madrid, Arsenal, and Paris Saint-Germain, in addition to Barcelona.
Reports from April indicated Barcelona’s interest in Álvarez as a replacement for Robert Lewandowski, who recently transferred to Chicago Fire FC. Laporta disclosed that the offer made for the former Manchester City striker is estimated to exceed 100 million euros (around $114 million).
“Deco, our sporting director, initiated discussions for Álvarez, who has been interested in joining us since his time at City,” Laporta stated. He confirmed his conversations with Atlético CEO Miguel Ángel Gil Marín, who has shown reluctance to allow Álvarez to leave the club.
Laporta underscored that the offer remains on the table, but he cautioned that it is not without limits. Atlético rejected the proposal citing a lack of suitable replacements. “If they find one, we will see how it unfolds,” he added.
Álvarez’s situation has quickly escalated into one of this summer’s most significant transfer stories. Previous reports indicate interest from Arsenal and Paris Saint-Germain, while Real Madrid’s bid of 150 million euros (approximately $171 million) reportedly fell short.
Barcelona’s pursuit, however, has incited frustration from Atlético Madrid. After Álvarez’s disclosure, Gil Marín accused Barcelona of displaying “a total lack of respect” and indicated plans to report them to FIFA for engaging with a player still under contract until 2030.
Despite these allegations, Laporta defended Barcelona’s position, stating the club had no influence on Álvarez’s desire to leave. “We respect Atlético,” he remarked. “He didn’t mention our club at all. We merely presented a formal offer.”
“Álvarez had caught our attention long before his time at City. We recognize Atlético’s reluctance to part with him due to their need for a replacement,” Laporta continued. He expressed bewilderment over Atlético’s complaints, deeming their strategy unclear. “This may not be my first contract negotiation with Atlético, but it certainly is one of the most sensitive.”
Sources inform that Álvarez, currently representing Argentina at the World Cup, would prefer to join Barcelona above all suitors. Several Barça players have publicly voiced their eagerness for Álvarez’s potential arrival, with Lamine Yamal being the most recent to express support for him joining the ranks at Spotify Camp Nou.
Álvarez joined Atlético from Manchester City in 2024, in a deal worth up to 95 million euros (approximately $108 million). In his time at Atlético, he has netted 49 goals in 106 appearances across all competitions, with an impressive tally of 10 goals in the previous Champions League season.
