Federal Delegation Investigates Gas Leak in Rivers State
A federal government delegation, led by the Minister of State for Petroleum Resources (Gas) Ekperikpe Ekpo, is currently in Rivers State to evaluate the impact of gas leakage in the Bir communities of Degema Local Government Area. This visit comes shortly after Governor Siminalai Hubala pledged swift actions to address the ongoing environmental crisis in the region.
Collaboration with State Authorities
Mr. Ekpo convened an expanded meeting on Wednesday with key stakeholders, including representatives from both federal and state governments, alongside local community leaders at the Government House. This dialogue aimed to assess the current situation and explore strategies to mitigate the public’s exposure to environmental pollution.
Government’s Response to Environmental Concerns
Onwuka Nzesi, the chief spokesperson for the state governor, emphasized the meeting’s purpose: to thoroughly review the situation and actively seek ways to protect the community from adverse effects related to the gas leak. Minister Ekpo commended Governor Hubala for his hospitality and expressed gratitude for the local government’s efforts to tackle the residents’ challenges.
Federal Commitment to Safety
Addressing concerns about the gas leak, Ekpo clarified that the federal government is not inactive in this crisis. He highlighted that experts were dispatched to the scene immediately upon receiving reports of the incident. While investigations are ongoing, he noted the absence of nearby oil or gas facilities complicates the determination of the leak’s cause.
Community Engagement and Safety Priorities
As part of the government’s efforts, Ekpo underlined the importance of community engagement, stating that a follow-up visit to the Bir community is crucial for developing sustainable solutions in partnership with the local residents. He reassured the community that their safety remains the primary concern, acknowledging their fears and the potential hazards linked to the gas leak.
Local Government’s Pledge for Support
Governor Hubala has called for immediate and thorough actions to remedy the issues stemming from the gas leak. He also committed to renovating primary health care centers in the area to address health-related challenges faced by residents. Speaking to the media after the meeting, Hubala noted the federal government’s resolve to identify the root causes of the incident and implement lasting solutions.
Commitment from Regulatory Bodies
Oritumeiwa Isan, Chief Executive Officer of the Nigeria Upstream Petroleum Regulatory Commission (NUPRC), assured that the agency would exert every effort to resolve the problem effectively. Isan confirmed that the NUPRC and industry operators are prepared to respond to the needs of affected communities, offering assistance that includes providing drinking water and firefighting resources.
Local Voices Call for Government Support
Lena Dappa, spokesperson for the Bir Kingdom Council of Mayors, articulated the challenges confronting local communities during the meeting. She urged for increased government support to safeguard lives and livelihoods amid the ongoing crisis.
