Lando Norris Weighs in on Max Verstappen’s Potential Move from Red Bull to McLaren
Lando Norris expressed positivity regarding the possibility of rival Max Verstappen leaving Red Bull to join McLaren. In recent weeks, discussions between Verstappen’s representatives and McLaren have surfaced amid growing uncertainty about the four-time world champion’s future with Red Bull.
Although Verstappen is contracted with Red Bull until the end of 2028, reports suggest there is an exit clause that could allow him to depart at the conclusion of this season. This speculation has prompted McLaren Chairman Zac Brown to clarify that neither reigning champion Norris nor his teammate Oscar Piastri is at risk of replacement. Nonetheless, Norris addressed the rumors during a press conference Thursday ahead of the British Grand Prix.
Norris remarked, “Honestly, I don’t understand why the focus is on Max when there are many drivers eager to join McLaren. It’s excellent news that a four-time world champion might want to join us, whether there’s truth to it remains to be seen.” He added, “Though I have always been excited about the possibility of driving alongside outstanding talent, I’m currently pleased with my situation at McLaren, where I aim to stay for many more years.”
With an eye toward the future, Norris emphasized that he and Piastri are collaborating effectively and are focused on their performance as a team. “Our priority remains working well together and building on our current successes,” he stated.
Verstappen’s contract reportedly allows him the freedom to leave for another team should he find himself outside the top two in the driver’s championship at the summer break in 2027. Presently, Verstappen ranks seventh, trailing championship leader Kimi Antonelli by 98 points and second-placed George Russell by 58 points.
In the past, Norris has conveyed his willingness to partner with Verstappen, echoing his admiration for other world champions such as Lewis Hamilton and Fernando Alonso. “Competing against drivers known for their excellence is a fantastic opportunity for me,” he said, adding, “I look forward to what the future has in store.”
Verstappen Responds to Rumors Amid Racing Focus
When approached by Sky Sports F1, Verstappen maintained a lighthearted demeanor while addressing rumors of a meeting with McLaren. “That’s what you say,” he played off, emphasizing his concentration on racing rather than contract negotiations. Following a strong performance that saw him finish second in Austria, Verstappen is eager to maintain that momentum at Silverstone.
After stating he had nothing more to add regarding the speculation, he said, “I’m focused on what I’m doing here with the team. We had a productive weekend last week, and I’m keen to keep that support moving forward.” As Sky Sports F1’s Craig Slater walked away from the interview, Verstappen humorously reinforced that he hadn’t confirmed any meetings had occurred, stating, “I didn’t say that, you said that.”
Piastri Reassured About His Position at McLaren
Speculation regarding Verstappen’s potential move has led to discussions about its impact on Piastri’s position, who is also rumored to be under consideration for a switch to Red Bull. However, Piastri expressed confidence, stating that he has received multiple reassurances from the team about their satisfaction with his performance.
“The rumors don’t affect me much,” Piastri remarked. “There’s no questioning Max’s talent. I have a contract, and I’ve been assured that the team is pleased with my contributions, which I truly appreciate.” He concluded by expressing contentment with his current role: “I’m committed to building on the successes I’ve achieved over the last few years.”
