Peter Mba, the Governor of Enugu State, has presented land and a substantial cash award of NOK 150 million to players and management of Rangers International Football Club for clinching the 2025/2026 NPFL title.
A Celebration of Victory at the Government House
Governor Mba made the announcement during a celebratory dinner on Tuesday night at the Government House in Enugu, where he honored the players, technical crew, and management team.
Rangers FC Achieves Historic Ninth Title
The club secured its ninth league title, equaling the record, by defeating Ikorodu City Boys 2-1 in Lagos on May 24, 2026. This victory also marks the second league championship in three years under the current administration led by Mbafu.
A Symbol of Hope and Resilience
During the event, Governor Mba expressed the joy of the Enugu State government and its people in celebrating the team’s achievements, likening the occasion to welcoming back a child who has excelled in their studies. He detailed that the cash prizes would comprise 100 million naira for the players and 50 million naira for the technical and management staff.
Land Allocations and Continued Support for Sports Development
Additionally, Mba confirmed that land in Enugu would be allocated to all players, with special plots set aside for the general manager, head coach, secretary, and assistant coaches. He emphasized that Rangers is not just a football club but a beacon of resilience and unity, embodying hope and social renewal since its founding after Nigeria’s civil war.
Admiration for the Team’s Dedication and Future Aspirations
The governor recognized the hard work of players, coaches, and management throughout the season, stating that the championship trophy represented their dedication and effort. He also praised the leadership and commitment of Rangers’ General Manager, Amobi Ezeaku, drawing parallels between the qualities required for building a successful football team and those needed for nation-building.
Investment in Sports Infrastructure and Future Goals
Mba reassured the team of ongoing government support, highlighting that sports is a vital element of his administration’s development policy. He mentioned that renovations at Nnamdi Azikiwe Stadium, affectionately called the ‘Cathedral’, would adhere to international standards and be ready for Rangers’ upcoming continental matches. He affirmed Enugu State’s continued investment in sports infrastructure in anticipation of hosting the 2026 National Sports Games, aiming for a remarkable and memorable event.
Enduring Commitment to Excellence and Ambition
While celebrating the achievements, Mba encouraged the team to remain vigilant and not rest on their laurels, noting that complacency can undermine success. He urged them to stay strong and continue their efforts toward winning further trophies, specifically the coveted continental title.
Earlier, the Commissioner for Sports and Youth Development, Lloyd Ekweremadu, expressed gratitude for the governor’s ongoing support for sports initiatives and acknowledged the team’s victory as a testament to the governor’s commitment to excellence. During the gathering, General Manager Ezeaku highlighted that the club’s success is a result of discipline, preparation, and ambition, noting the significance of unity among government, management, players, and supporters in achieving their dreams of competing on a continental stage.
As Rangers FC and its fans took to the streets to celebrate their NPFL victory with much enthusiasm, they paraded the trophy before attending the government dinner, further encapsulating the fervor and pride of their historic achievement.
