Ocasio-Cortez Backs El-Sayed in Michigan Senate Primary
Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez has officially endorsed Abdul El-Sayed, the former Wayne County Health Director, in Michigan’s highly competitive Democratic Senate primary. This endorsement signifies a notable moment in the midterm elections, highlighting the increasing influence of progressive voices within the party.
As reported by the New York Times, Ocasio-Cortez’s backing is one of the most significant endorsements from a progressive lawmaker during this election cycle. “After observing this campaign for over a year, it is evident that Abdul El-Sayed is the frontrunner to secure this seat in November,” she stated in a message shared by El-Sayed’s campaign. Ocasio-Cortez noted that he is forging effective coalitions by advocating for policies that resonate deeply with workers.
El-Sayed is contending in a three-way primary against Representative Haley Stevens and State Senator Mallory McMorrow, scheduled for August. The victor will proceed to the general election, a race that has garnered considerable national attention. McMorrow’s campaign declined to comment, while a spokesperson for Stevens’ campaign also refrained from providing statements.
This primary marks the first occasion Ocasio-Cortez has extended her endorsement in a Senate race, having previously abstained from endorsing candidates in contested primaries in Maine, Texas, Iowa, and other states. The decision to support El-Sayed underscores a strategic move to influence the party’s direction towards more progressive policies.
The endorsement comes amid a wave of success for progressive opposition groups in recent primary elections. El-Sayed has steadily gained momentum as the preeminent progressive contender in this pivotal race. His policies and campaign strategy aim to mobilize a diverse coalition of voters eager for change.
In a response to Ocasio-Cortez’s endorsement, El-Sayed praised her profound commitment to advocating for ordinary citizens. “AOC embodies courageous and principled leadership,” he expressed. “Receiving her endorsement is a tremendous honor, and it signals our path to victory.”
Ocasio-Cortez’s endorsement contrasts with Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer’s support for Stevens. Both Stevens and McMorrow have received endorsements from various influential figures and organizations. Stevens garnered backing from the Detroit News editorial board, along with endorsements from Senators Ruben Gallego, Catherine Cortez Masto, and Chris Coons. On the other hand, McMorrow has been supported by the Detroit Free Press Editorial Board and prominent senators including Elizabeth Warren, Chris Murphy, and Martin Heinrich.
The Democratic primary winner is set against a backdrop of strategic discussions among party members regarding which candidates stand the best chance of winning the general election. This sentiment is particularly resonant in swing states like Michigan, which was won by Donald Trump in 2024 after Biden’s victory in 2020. Stevens advocates a more centrist approach to appeal to swing voters, while McMorrow seeks to position herself as a candidate with broader appeal across the political spectrum.
As Democrats focus on the Michigan Senate race, it is viewed as crucial for securing a majority in the Senate. Senator Gary Peters (D-Mich.) is not seeking re-election, making the Democratic primary even more significant. The winner will likely face former Republican Representative Mike Rogers, who narrowly lost in 2024 to Senator Elissa Slotkin by less than half a percentage point.
